ADOBE TOUR in EGYPT - Fine Arts Agenda
Saturday, August 8, 2009 , Fine Arts Cairo

A Great Post from Serge Jespers | Platform Evangelist :-
Before we start and just so we get this out of the way… For 2 years now, Adobe pays my paycheck. That said, I “saw the light” of Flash more than 13 years ago. Because of my long history with Flash, I feel I can say that this is an unbiased post.
Everywhere
First of all, Flash is everywhere. I’m not just talking about its ubiquity but also about the variety of devices it is available on. It’s not just a browser plugin anymore. The Flash Platform now extends from desktop to mobile to consumer electronics. There are already more than 1 billion devices in the market today that support Flash content. While this is a “lighter” version of the Flash Player, it already has a lot of its bigger brother’s features and is already used for lots of mobile applications, games and promotional content. Together with the Open Screen Project partners, Adobe aims to bring the same consistent runtime that you’re used to in your browser to a broad variety of devices. In the not too distant future, you’ll be able to repurpose the code base across multiple devices. I’m actually doing a workshop about that very topic at MAX this year!
Consistent
With Flash, you never needed to worry about how your application will look in browser X or on operating system Z. And you still don’t have to worry about that. If Flash Player is installed, the application works and behaves consistently across all browsers and operating systems. Even applications/sites built with Flash 1 still work as designed. If you want to use any of the new features that are available with a new release of Flash Player, you (as the developer) can use express install to transparently upgrade the Flash Player. The same thing goes for desktop development with AIR. A single AIR application installer runs on Mac, Windows and Linux machines without having to worry about operating specific settings or features.
Community
Even back in the early days of Flash, the community around it grew every day. Just about all of the early community sites around Flash are still alive and kicking. Ultrashock and FlashKit, for instance, are still going strong. If you get stuck somewhere, there’s always someone around to help out. If you’re looking for a particular ActionScript library, chances are that someone has already created one. Some of these ActionScript libraries have even caused some amazing innovations on their own. Papervision 3D and FLARToolkit are just a couple examples. Many sites and applications like Facebook, Flickr and Twitter even have dedicated ActionScript 3.0 libraries.
Open
Yes… Open! Not only is Adobe very open about what it’s doing and future roadmaps, the file formats used by Flash Player are also open. The specs for the SWF and FLV file formats are open as well as the specs for AMF (the binary format for exchanging data used by the Flash Player) and RTMP. Adobe also uses and supports many open source projects like Eclipse and WebKit and also contributes to the open source community.
But the most important reason is actually pretty simple. The Flash Platform is just a lot of fun to develop for and it’s very clear that the future is looking very bright for Flash Platform developers. Flash on!

The annual Adobe MAX Awards is a global awards program that recognizes the best uses of Adobe software for creating engaging experiences. Submissions are being accepted now through July 31, 2009.
You may also nominate a project that is not yours. You must have the project name, project creator’s name, contact information and be able to determine which category it should compete in. This information will be reviewed by the 2009 MAX Award Team. Notification will then be sent directly to the project creator to officially enter the 2009 MAX Awards Contest. The deadline for nominations is June 30, 2009.
The top three finalists in each of eight categories will be invited to showcase their work at MAX 2009. Winners will be selected via online voting from September 21, 2009 to October 6, 2009. Winners will be announced live at the MAX event. Entrants are also eligible for Honorable Mention recognition that will be announced prior to the event.
The MAX Awards program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable exposure for innovative projects that brought success to you or your clients’ organizations. Receiving a MAX Award is a prestigious honor recognized throughout the industry.
Finalists and winners are selected in each of eight categories: Advertising & Branding, Education, Enterprise Productivity, Entertainment, Mobile, Public Sector, Social Computing, and Social Responsibility. For additional details to help select the most appropriate category for your entry, please see the Categories Tab.
New in 2009! Category winners will be selected from the category finalists by public online voting. All finalists will be carefully selected by the Adobe Judging Councils, one council for each category. Each Council consists of a team of Adobe experts and industry representatives with comprehensive knowledge about the category. The Judging Councils are also responsible for determining recipients of Honorable Mention recognition. For additional details about judging, see the Rules tab.
If you are an agency or vendor that would like to nominate a client’s project for a MAX Award, we strongly advise that you enlist a stakeholder or manager from the organization that you are nominating to participate in your submission. Alternatively, you may submit the project with the appropriate details along with your client’s explicit authorization and approval.

Adobe Systems has just updated some of its products, and Mac users out there can now download the new flavors of Adobe Flash Player, which reached version 10.0.32.18, and Adobe AIR, which is now at version 1.5.2. The Adobe Flash Player, in case you didn't know already, enables users to view rich web content, including designs, animation and application user interfaces, regardless of the browser used for navigation. As for Adobe AIR, it is a cross-operating system runtime that enables developers to work on rich Internet applications (RIAs) based on Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript or Ajax.
According to Adobe, the new versions of Flash Player and Adobe AIR are mainly meant to patch a series of vulnerabilities that have been discovered with the Flash Player. “These vulnerabilities could cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system,” the company states, while also announcing that it would affect Mac systems, along with Windows and Linux ones. These updates are also expected to be followed by new versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat v9.1.2 for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX.
The update for Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR, the company says, resolves the privilege escalation vulnerability, the heap overflow vulnerability, the null pointer vulnerability, the URL parsing heap overflow vulnerability, the integer overflow vulnerability and the stack overflow vulnerability that could potentially lead to code execution, as well as a clickjacking vulnerability that could enable an attacker “to lure a web browser user into unknowingly clicking on a link or dialog,” as well as “a local sandbox vulnerability that could potentially lead to information disclosure when SWFs are saved to the hard drive.”
Adobe says that the new update is critical, and that all those who are currently using Adobe Flash Player v9.0.159.0 and v10.0.22.87 on either Macintosh, Windows or Linux machines should update immediately to Adobe Flash Player 9.0.246.0 and 10.0.32.18. At the same time, users running Adobe AIR version 1.5.1 or earlier should update to Adobe AIR 1.5.2, the company recommends.

The graphics above display the adoption of Flash player versions 6 through 10, as well as it’s feature adoption over time. Flash 10, along with rich-media competitor Silverlight V.2, were released in October of 2008. Flash 10 already has an adoption at roughly 75% of all internet users, while Microsoft’s Silverlight is still under 20% adoption.

The user clicks on a button, the actions to be performed take a while, so you want to display an hour glass or a message to the user 'Please wait'. Not as easy as it sounds. The most obvious idea of toggling the visibilty of your message within a MOUSE_CLICK handler will not work. AS3 will never interrupt execution of a block of code to update the screen.
