Photoshop classes are starting to pop up all over town; you bet I'll take credit for that! But I'm not jealous... the more education that is out there, the more opportunities we have.
It's no secret, I LOVE Photoshop. There is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing the light bulb go off over someone's head, or watching the spark of creativity catch fire in someone's eyes. Photoshop has so many applications in a variety of fields, not just design and photography. I was surprised to discover there are specialized classes out there for Forensic Photoshop, Palientology Photoshop, and (my favorite) Underwater Photoshop (don't ask me how they water-proof the laptop!).
As our group continues to grow, I really want to cater classes to the things that you want to know. Of course, the catch-22 with Photoshop is, you have to know what all is in it to know what you're not using, and even after 14 years, I still learn something new every single day ("Oh my gosh, I didn't know it could do that!!!") I think Adobe's engineers must be some kind of freaks of nature... I can barely remember everything on my grocery list, but they thought of EVERYTHING. Okay, okay, maybe not every single thing, but honestly, I have to laugh when someone critiques some tiny aspect of the program. I mean, really??? If the manual actually covered everything the program did, rainforests would be depleted at an astounding rate.
So please, leave a little comment, and tell me what area you use Photoshop for and what you'd like to see in the future. I'm hoping that a strong showing here will draw some bigger names into the Houston area. Maybe even a Texas version of Photoshop World? (hint, hint, Mr. Kelby)
We had a great meetup last night despite the weather/wind/lack of room/noise level. That's the bad thing about teaching Photoshop for free; you take what you can get and rely on the kindness of strangers. We're so lucky that The Coffee Groundz hosts us; after calling several venues, it simply would not be possible to have this group without them. I love to teach, but... I'm not going to PAY to teach! lol
We still manage despite the challenges. To me, it's all worth it to see the occasional lightbulbs go off over people's heads. Nothing fires me up more than watching someone take a technique to a whole new level; I know I will never be the next big artist, but if I can put the tools in their hands, that's more than enough for me. The talent in our group is humbling; we're getting quite a blend of artists, designers, developers and photographers. I love the camaraderie. Everyone is so open with information, despite the fact that we are all competing for the same types of jobs. The truth is, Houston is large enough to support all of us if we can just get more national attention to the talent pool here. Austin is known for the SXSW festival... what are we known for?
Strange that I even care; until recently, I wouldn't even admit I was a Texan... but the way the people of this city come together is inspiring. So much creativity, so much talent, so much potential. I want to thank each and every person who takes advantage of the opportunity, and hope that everyone will get involved.
