A couple of weeks ago, we held the class for basic web design in Photoshop, when I realized that there is a great need in the Houston area for web education. With the rate of change in technology, many artists are quickly falling behind the learning curve. Simply knowing your file formats and HTML isn't going to cut it in this new era; this leaves our group with an interesting problem; images are no longer the backbone of a website. Code reigns in Web 2.0. But from a design standpoint, you can balance good design in Photoshop with the efficiency and practicality of code.
Problem is, I don't know a lot of code. So I'm calling on the talents of the group.
I'd like to start a Web Design track that focuses on various types of code, it's specific functions, and how to utilize Photoshopped elements within the site. This is going to require a few types of coders, so if you know any of the following elements and you're willing to participate in the group, please contact me:
HTML, CSS, PHP, Flash (Actionscript, preferrably 3.0). If you're versed in another type of webcode that you'd like to present to the group, please don't feel limited to the ones I've listed here. Since it's a Photoshop group, I don't want to stray too far... but honestly, there's few resources here in Houston, and I'd love to see a couple of spin-off groups form to give the techies here some options. The goal is a plugged-in Houston; we want to host the Renaissance of Web Design. Better sites & better design means better jobs for the tech sector.
Wow, talk about a good time! Last night was the official launch of the Houston Photoshop Meetup Webinar. I have to admit; I was terrified before it began. For one thing, my horrible DSL coverage by AT&T is spotty at best; I was afraid I might lose the signal mid-class. And then there was the functionality of Adobe Connect; I'd never tried it before.
Nothing like trial by fire.
But what an amazing group we have, willing to learn and experiment together! Thank you so much for your patience and your participation last night. Despite having ZERO focus, we covered a LOT of Photoshop ground with both beginner and advanced concepts. I see many webinars in our future that are zeroed in on very specific topics... and with the talent in this group, it's the perfect opportunity for others to get their feet wet as instructors!
In addition to the visual demonstration, I was so impressed by the other member's willingness to share ideas and techniques through Connect's Chat feature. At times, it almost became distracting; there were so many good ideas flowing through Chat that I had to continually stop and see what people were saying! Another great feature of Connect is the ability to upload and share files (a feature that I'm sure will come in handy in future webinars!)
Another big thank you to everyone who attended, and congratulations to member Tommy, who won the Twitter race to recieve a full version of Photoshop CS4 Extended! There will be many other opportunities through the year to win some great prizes as our group continues to pick up sponsors. I hope you guys will continue to spread the word about the Houston Photoshop Meetup Group. I'm very glad thankful for such wonderful, giving, open and talented members! This group truly is a pleasure to be a part of.
