AETO Blog - news and updates!

    • Entry posted Aug 12 by AETO in Blog public

      Hey gang,

Great news - we've updated our website!  What was once a formidable iWeb creation is now a bunch of simple HTML pages!  Woo hoo!

The new site is much easier on the eyes and simple for us to edit.  Our next step will be to add a CMS with the help of group member Pat Munoz, but we're not quite there yet.

Please take a look at the www.aeto.ca beta site and send your suggestions for improvement to info@aeto.ca.

      See y'all in a week!

      Russ

      Hey guys,

      You spoke, and we listened.

For tomorrow night's user group meeting, our raffle will work a bit differently from previous ones.

This time around, we are going to be selling one ticket per person for $10.

Grand prize winners will not be eligible for any prizes at the meeting following their big win.  This is retroactive for our last meeting, so our super-lucky May grand prize winner will not be eligible for prizes at our June meeting.

This should even the playing field a bit -- we received lots of great suggestions after the last meeting, and we're going to try this method for now.

If tomorrow's raffle works well, we will stick with this format for future meetings.

By the way, if you haven't heard about tomorrow night's grand prize, it is a copy of Maxon's Cinema4D + MoGraph!

See you tomorrow night at Element156 (156 Augusta Ave.) @ 6:30pm, and good luck!

      - Russ

No recert exam up there just yet, but maybe soon.  Looks like I don't have to study again just yet!  Phew...

Today's a good day, for I passed my ACE exam for AE CS3 (probably just in time for a CS4 exam to come out).  It took scads of studying, but I nailed it.

If anybody's thinking about taking theirs, let me know.  I'll pass on as much help as I can!

Still looking for a co-chair for this group, so if you've got anybody in mind, or would like to co-chair it yourself, let me know!

      Thanks!

Well, at least I hope that's what some of you are saying!

My name is Russ, and I work primarily on the web, but have been working working with motion graphics for some time now, and in particular, Adobe After Effects.  I am working towards my AE CS3 ACE certification (if you want study tips, I can help), and am interested in bringing together some motion graphics artists from the Toronto area to create a community.

I'll set up meetings, where we'll go to a neutral location (I'll get us a room at a local pub or book a meeting room somewhere), and we'll talk shop.  I want this to be a comfortable group for AE users of any skill level, and of any professional background.  If you work at Tim Horton's and have just installed AE for the first time, you're welcome to join.  If you are working for Disney and know more about AE than I'll ever know, you are welcome to join.

Also, if you are an AE expert, or have interesting information about the motion graphics industry, I would love to talk to you about acting as a guest speaker at one of our first meetings.  There would be very little work - prepare a quick introduction of what you do and how you use AE, then either:

      a) deliver a short tutorial or show off some tips or tricks

      or

      b) talk about the industry as you see it, and how motion graphics are changing or fitting in right now

The second thing I need is a co-chair for this group.  If you are interested in helping me keep things organized here, please drop me a note at russfairley@yahoo.com - Adobe requires it, and I could use the help!

If we are successful in getting this group off the ground, we'll have well-known guests from across North America at future events.  I've spoken with a couple of potentials, and you would be amazed to know who's interested!

Keep up the great graphics work, Toronto, and join AETO!

      All the best,

      - Russ

    • Web Editor CanadaNew After Effects CS3 Video Tutorial! - Feb 13

Source: Web Editor Canada by Russ

      Hey gang,

I've created a new tutorial for After Effects CS3, and I'm trying out a new video format. There are still some issues with the frame rate, and I didn't have my sound set up quite right, but what the hey...

Let me know if you like the format.

About the tutorial - one of the things that struck me when I was studying for my After Effects CS3 certification exam, was that you always had to rely on 3D applications to create 3D text and shapes. I mean, AE CS3 is a 3D app in that you can work in z-space, but creating a 3D object without building each of the sides and modeling it in z-space (which is a massive pain) just isn't really possible.

Well, here's a little trick to create some 3D text in After Effects.

Click here to watch @ Russfairley.com/tutorials.html

Note: I can't take all of the credit for this trick - I learned a few different techniques from Adobe guru Chad Perkins, and combined them to achieve this effect, so thanks, Chad.

If you like this effect, look around on the Internet - plenty of people have gotten creative with AE's amazing "Shatter" effect.

      Talk soon!

      - Russ
