Title
'Server detected a backward timestamp' messages in FMS logs
Content
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to know if there is any update on "Server detected a backward timestamp" messages? Does this warning have any impact on fms server(in term of huge memory likages reported)/server on which fms is installed?
If any of you is a member of Flash Media list for last 2years. Then you must have remember there was a discussion regarding this issue i am quoting few lines from that discussion said by Asa:
"Thus I've seen this before with a server machine that's set to take
updates via Network Time Protocol, Service, Whatever. The point being
that FMS shouldn't be on a machine that can turn its own time backwards.
The OS won't do this alone, so something in the settings is moving time
backwards. We're working here to make ourselves more flexible for this
sort of thing. It's tricky since we're very dependent on the very fast
system time calls as opposed to the slower PerformanceCounter runs."
and in case servers don't have time update function i.e. NTP port are closed.
this is what Asa has said "In that case I'm not sure what's going on. Can you please file a bug on
this if you haven't already and that way I or one of my colleagues can
be given the time to investigate further."
Just wanted to know if there is any update in this regard/warning/error repoted in log file?
Thanks,
Vivek Lakhanpal.

posted 02/06/09 by Konstantin Wilms | Report Abuse
Are you getting this from live streams or on-demand files? This is a problem with versions of FMS earlier than 3.x -- it will cause a memory leak. For 3.x and greater, some of these files will simply not play (often on-demand files with this error have additional metadata corruption). You can run fmscheck but NOTE fmscheck will not always correctly analyze the file(s) and identify all the errors.
|

posted 02/09/09 by viveklakhanpal | Report Abuse
Thanks Konstantin and Asa to look into it. We have currently FMS 3.0.2 r217 installed on server. WE have live stream application whereas streams being recorded at backend as well. We came across quite a few flv video files as well which have missing chunks of around 5secs in them i.e. flv jumps around 3-4sec suddenly in between on timeline while playing back. I ran flvcheck on one of the particular flv video file that file generate following error: "Error: -11 Found backward timestamp.". Not sure if it's related to the one found on server. We have also stopped time sync thing but to no help.

Whereas i do feel there is memory leakage. We have to restart our FMS server almost every 2nd day as memory usage reaches almost 3-3.5GB out of 4GB of totol system physical Memory. Even when users count is down to 5-10 from average peak user count of 150-170. memory usage don't come down.

Thanks,

Vivek Lakhanpal
|

Have been reading have the internet to find a sollution, but most of the sollutions are about fixing the recorded file. I would llike to fix the recording as it streams.

Have you found anything on this topic that made you fix the problem?
The event log is full with the backward timestamp error and we are not very happy with it.
Flv's are not playing whene recorded.... look slike the same thing to me.

gr,
martijn

|

posted 07/24/09 by Graeme Bull | Report Abuse
I've heard more that this is either a network issue or a flash player issue. The backwards timestamp is the packets getting sent to the server in the wrong order. It saves the file to the disc as it gets it and if a packet comes in out of order then it gets confused. (This is a theory, no hard evidence to prove it other than if Adobe chimes in).

No fix for it though. I think that FMS has to be smarter when recording personally.
|
