Title
Flash Camp Feedback
Content
Thought I'd start a quick thread and get everyone's feedback on Flash Camp.
What did you think of it?
If you went to the first Flex Camp, how did it compare to that one?
Did it reflect what you asked for?
What presentations did you like/dislike and why?
You get the idea.

Make people wear name tags - easier to network that way - people are less afraid to introduce themself.

3. Fix the damn winner app so that you can say give me 10 winners and they show up all at once :)

Catalyst was a good session and the dude showing his own soccer app - neat to see peeps doing stuff on their own time and how people are using stuff outside of commercial work.
|

Some extra circulation would have been great.

Although this was called a camp it wasn't very BarCamp like, really lacked the interactivity you find in an unconfernece format which I assume was the intent since it was called FlashCamp. In the next camp event I'd like to see opportunities to have smaller round table discussions, a pannel of experts debating and more local content. More than one stream would allow participants to get involved in the subjects they are most interested in.

I got the sense there was a lot of knowledge in the room but nobody got to share except the speakers.

All said I want to thank those involved, the event was well organized, informative and I had a good time. See you in April.
|

posted 03/19/09 by Anthony Carlo | Report Abuse
I agree with BWhoCodes. Some smaller discussions would have been nice; as there was no doubt a great amount of knowledge in that room that was not shared even if it were willing to do so. The soccor app was definitely very cool, and I enjoyed learning more about the profiler ...

I suppose it would be nice if there were more "flashy demos," that could really make Flex interesting. I do not know a whole lot about it besides compiling some stuff in FDT using the Flex SDK that didn't need to be done within the Flash IDE (some Papervision models stuff). Maybe that would be an interesting ffort if i were not alone in this: perhaps some introductory projects that could show some of us Flash guys why Flex should be used in some situations. If, of course, everyone who is there already knows this then maybe I work on getting to know it better before I go to the next one haha ... it's easy toget busy with the current i am sure you could understand.

Some some cents in the koi pond ..
|

posted 03/20/09 by Evan E. | Report Abuse
It was nice to hear presentations from more Adobe personnel this time around. Ryan Stewart's Catalyst presentation was really interesting and nice to have such a prominent person in the Flash/Flex world as a speaker. Maybe more such big names can be brought in next time. Maybe include some Actionscript/non-Flex Framework speakers or even a Flash Player engineer. Also, I noticed this time there were fewer questions and answers despite having so much brain power and expertise in that room and there no were little "rewards/prizes" for asking questions like when books and such were awarded in the August camp.

I like the raffle format as it adds more suspense I think and should have given more time for final questions like in the camp last August.
|

posted 03/24/09 by mashakrol | Report Abuse
1) Concur with everyone re: air in room; funnily though, someone cracked the back door as people were leaving and a nice breeze rolled in from the freezing outside. Figures.

2) The Catalyst presentation was downright awesome, partly because Ryan does such a great job of being excited about the stuff he's presenting (probably an official part of his job as an evangelist, being excited). The rest of the guys could pick it up a little in terms of not sounding like they're bored.

3) Kudos on giving away Flex books, and I really felt like I scored on those glossy Flex stickers. Woo! I actually felt that the winner app was right pretty, though it definitely made it impossible for myself and others to concentrate on/ask intelligent questions during the Q&A. The winners of swag should probably be announced as an activity separate from all others.

4) I remember the MC mentioning that they ran out of food again, so that's probably easily fixed. Really appreciated the veggie platters though, maybe diversify with some fruit ones too :D

Looking forward to the next one, great event overall!
|

The feedback is extremely important as we will most likely be organising the next camp. Not to mention, hopefully getting the Global CF9 and FX4 User Group Tour to stop here in Ottawa. Please encourage anyone you know to give us more feedback and suggestions! For those of you who are coming out to the meeting, see you next week!
|

posted 03/29/09 by Phill Motuzas | Report Abuse
There was a nice variety of presentations and I think they were all well received, but with iPhone development becoming increasingly popular (and with some agencies that usually leverage Flash based technologies turning to iPhone development), now is the time for Adobe to talk more about Flash Lite, and their plans for the future of mobile development. Also, game development is becoming increasingly popular and with some of the amazing platforms that are out there now I’d like to know what Adobe’s plans are to stay relevant in that space. Finally, considering the recent security concerns surrounding Flash Player, it would be nice if they talked about security, security best practices and maybe even SWFScan. I'm certainly not trying to give Adobe a hard time, but as a long time supporter and developer I think it’s important Adobe sometimes answers the hard questions and lets us know they’re thinking about the same things we are.

See you all on Wednesday!
|

posted 03/30/09 by J_A_X | Report Abuse
Beer and food is always appreciated, however, I found myself bored when it came to most of the presentations. When speakers are to speak, make sure that they can actually speak and not just a developer. Developers have a tendency to go a bit too technical which can be good for some things, but when it's just a presentation about a new product it's better to stick with features. Keep it short and interesting (ie. Catalyst Presentation).
|

posted 04/01/09 by bloonket | Report Abuse
Flash Camp initiative is great. Really liked the FXG presentation and demo - it offered just enough to prompt me to learn more. Liked the content and delivery of the local presentations at the last Flash Camp better than the remote ones this time.

Ideas about what I'd like to see at future Flash Camps:

* Presentation and maybe open mike experiences on practical and simple steps to optimize and shrink swf files

* Best practices for integration of openid/oauth and general security with Flash

* Best practices and demo of Flash/Ajax integration

* More about 3D and FXG

* How to use PaperVision

* More information about drawing/graphics - retain stack practices, efficiencies of drawing api with Flash

|

posted 04/01/09 by J_A_X | Report Abuse
I'd have to agree with bloonket about the 3D/papervision thing. I'm getting more and more involved in this and would like to know more about what adobe is doing about it, like video card accelerated 3d graphics, or maybe a possible built in physics engine?
|
