"Wallaby," the Flash to HTML5 Conversion Engine, Now on Adobe Labs

Entry

Adobe recently posted to their Labs site a downloadable, functional version of "Wallaby," the Flash to HTML5 conversion engine that was demonstrated at Adobe MAX last year, and that was highlighted during our meeting covering new and interesting technologies demonstrated at MAX. Wallaby converts Flash animations into their HTML5 equivalents, using JavaScript, CSS3, CSS transformations, and plain old PNGs to make the animation work in the browser without Flash. It doesn't convert ActionScript (sorry!), but maybe that's in another tool that Adobe is working on right now.

The good news about this is that the technology may make its way into future iterations of products like Adobe Presenter or Captivate, where you could create complex animations and information presentations without the customer needing Flash installed on their computer or device. It could mean that iOS device users in particular might be able to see presentations created in these tools. Most likely, however, the technology will be used for advertisers so that they have a HTML5, Flash-less solution for generating ads that gets around common and popular tools like FlashBlock and ClickToFlash.
