Title
CouchDB and Box2D at next meeting
Entry
We're excited to have 2 presentations at the next meeting. We'll be hearing from Alex Hodgkiss as he talks about Box2D. Alex is our newest course director for the universities Flex Framework course. We're also excited to announce our first student presentation... Stephen Rivas will be talking about working with CouchDB via Flash. Stephen has been a rockstar Web Design & Development student, and we are excited to have him present.
Check out the full poster (created by Stephen and Parker Young ) at : http://wddbs.com/~jmadsen/fsfpug/posters/FSFPUG_May_2011.pdf
We'll be broadcasting over Adobe Connect (with our new wireless microphone w00t!) at: http://experts.adobeconnect.com/fsfpug/
CouchDB session description from Stephen:
"NoSQL Databases such as MongoDB and CouchDB provide a lot of really interesting options for data storage and synchronization. They also provide very nice horizontal scaling, and trade things like storage space for enhanced retrieval speeds. Because Flash 10.2 does not support the PUT and DELETE HTTP methods, you can't exactly fire up a cloud CouchDB app and just start using it with your application. That doesn't mean however, that you can't use these new technologies with Flash - we're not dead! It's actually really easy to utilize an ExternalInterface with JavaScript to allow your Flash applications to obtain cloud power"
Box2D Session Description from Alex:
"Box2D began life as a 2D physics engine library for C++, standing as a powerful and diverse engine, even powering hits like Angry Birds. Over time it has been ported to over a dozen different programming languages and frameworks. The engine has a strong hold in Flash now as Box2DAS3 and Box2DFlex. We'll be covering how to install Box2D, and different ways to use the engine for development in Flash"
