March already.  Sorry for the lack of activity on the site here.  I've just submitted the initial version of an "end-use suite" (my name for it) for a client, consisting of a user guide, companion online help (created with RoboHelp - or as I like to call it, "King Bobo-Hep") and a handful of tutorial movies developed with Captivate.  Along the way I did the manual graphics with Photoshop, used Fireworks for the online pix, and recorded and edited the audio with Audition.  If I had done the manual in Framemaker, it would have been an all-Adobe tool production.  But the client needs to make and track changes, so it was written in Word.  But once the final version is approved, it gets locked down as a PDF with Acrobat.

So what are you up to?

So What Drives You to Keep Creating?

In an earlier post, I described a project I had been working on for most of the late autumn and winter:  an "End-User Suite" for Comdata's Fleet Team product, consisting of a user guide, online help (created with RoboHelp), and a set of tutorial movies (developed with Captivate).  Along the way, I had help from Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and Audition.  I submitted the first pass of all parts of the suite about three weeks ago. 

This was intense work that I did during nights and weekends, and I even had to sneak in a few hours of work here and there during my regular technical writing contract gig.  But when I finally turned over that first batch of work, I was able to reclaim my free time, knowing that I would still need to, within a few weeks, need to make revisions to the suite.  No matter:  I was going to enjoy myself for awhile.

After about a week, I began feeling some twitches of withdrawal.  I began going through my CS5 and Tech Communications Suite products, trying to create some work for myself - some kind of wreckless experimentation that would lead to a new skill - maybe- even going as far as to pull an MP3 of "MacArthur Park" into Audition to experiment with effects and even try a remix.  Believe me:  you don't want to hear Richard Harris bellowing about a cake left out in the rain with the "Posessed" filter applied to it, 

That got me to wondering:  how many of you have finished a big project, thinking you were going to take some needed time off, but shortly found yourself wanting to create something more, something new?  Is it our nature?  Or is it that we're fortunate enough to be working with the best tools in the business?
