Moving Pictures: Exploring a Workflow with After Effects and Premiere
Moving Pictures: Exploring a Workflow with Adobe After Effects and Premiere As graphic professionals, we are all familiar with the old maxim "A picture is worth a thousand words." At 24 "pictures" per second or more, you can get even more "said" with video! As you know, digital technology is revolutionizing media, bringing "movie-making" into the reach of anyone with a camera and a computer. More than that, however, it is also blurring the lines that historically existed between film and television/video. We are fast approaching a time when creating video content will become "media agnostic" and the the same basic principles of camera and timing (editing) will apply to all content, from Web videos displayed on phones to the screens at your local cineplex. This is your chance to see two local professionals explain the basics of how to use Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects to create video worth watching. In this presentation, Jim May and Adam Kilbourn will offer a glimpse into the Adobe production pipeline. Jim will use AfterEffects to integrate computer-generated elements with a live-action scene, using compositing tools, color correction and effects to simulate a rainy scene. Adam Kilbourne will then take the final result and edit it together with titles, music and other live-action footage into a short movie trailer using Adobe Premiere. Adobe AfterEffects is a visual effects and compositing tool which enables artists to integrate a myriad of computer generated imagery with live action footage to create a seamless result. http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/features.html Adobe Premiere is an editing package optimized for assembling and editing footage from diverse sources from cell phone video to RED cameras, adding titles, audio and graphics, and outputting the final result to any platform, from web video to theatrical release. http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere.html ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS: Jim May is a digital effects artist, with over twenty years of experience in the creation of digital video and graphic content for multiple meda. His work spans multiple industries, from graphical effects and cinematics for the PC game market to visual effects for commercials, film, television and animation. As a Visual Effects Artist, Jim has worked on numerous commercial projects, with clients such as Nationwide Insurance, Jeep, McDonald's, Cingular, the Royal Canadian Mint and Cache Creek Casino. His movie credits include "Serenity", and his television credits include "Lost" and "Battlestar Galactica". His work has earned him a Regional Emmy award (Regional, Graphics, Daytime non-news, "Auto B Good"), a Primetime Emmy nomination (Oustanding Visual effects for a Movie, Miniseries or special – "Life After People") and a Visual Effects Society nomination (Oustanding Visual Effects for a Movie. Miniseries or Special, "Infestation"). Jim's life in Las Vegas began in 1998 when he accepted an offer from Westwood Studios to become Lead Artist on the best-selling Command & Conquer franchise. He recently returned to Nevada in 2009 as an FX artist for Petroglyph Games. Learn more about Jim at Liquid Sky FX Adam Kilbourn is the Founder and President of Black Raven Films, a Las Vegas based video production business that specializes in corporate video production and political advertising. A graduate from UNLV with a bachelors degree in Theater Arts and Business Finance, Adam’s film and video production expertise has been developed over the years from watching and learning from others in the business as well as from good old fashioned trial and error. Having recently won the Audience Award for Best Nevada Film Maker at the Dam Short Film Festival 2013, the team is currently working on their first feature film to be shot in the spring of 2014. An active volunteer, Adam is currently affiliated with a number of professional and charitable organizations including the Las Vegas Jr. Wranglers Organization (Past-President); the Nevada Amateur Hockey Association (Board member); and Project 150, a non-profit that helps homeless and displaced high school students (webmaster). Once again, space for this month's meeting is being generously donated by UNLV Continuing Education. Like the User Groups, UNLV Continuing Education is all about lifelong learning. From dog training, to fashion design, to software of all kinds, to wine tasting to personal finance, classes are waiting for curious minds at the Paradise Campus. The summer catalog is online now! Why is there a Free ticket and an Admission + Food Donation ticket? If you've attended any of our events, you know that we provide drinks and a selection of snacks. The Mangers feel that since our events are right after work, it's nice to have a little something to tide attendees over so that they can concentrate on the speakers. However, the AUG spends about $40 per event for food & beverage and the left over cash from the CS6 Launch party is dwindling fast. If possible, we are simply asking you to pitch in a few dollars to offset this cost. You are also invited to bring snacks or drinks to share or to put a dollar or two in the jar at the meetings. Thank you!
