No March Meeting
Entry posted on Feb 27 by outlan2000 , tagged News,Development

There will be no meeting for March 2012.  We will be back in April with more CF goodness!

Notes from the Coding Challenge
Entry posted on Mar 10 by outlan2000

Thanks to all of you who came out for this month's MVCFUG meeting and for taking the Coding Challenge!  The whole room left with lots of shared knowledge, while one very lucky winner walked away with $2100 of free Adobe software.  We saw some great uses of ColdFusion for the dynamic date output.

We're looking to boost attendance!  The Miami Valley ColdFusion User Group is here to meet the needs of the Dayton and surrounding area's Web development needs.  We know there are many skilled developers (especially ColdFusion developers) in the Miami Valley, and are looking to attract more attendees to our meetings.  If you are a developer yourself or know someone who is and haven't made it out to a meeting, yet, please try to check it out.

We have some great meeting topics coming up very soon, and much more great swag to give away!  Please be sure to check back often.  And, as always, if you have questions, comments, or suggestions for meeting topics, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Aaron and Lance

Please Vote for Us on December 1st!

For 2009, Liz Frederick at CFUnited is doing a call for topics and speakers, and Aaron Wolfe, Mike Harman, and I are going to put in some topics we'd like to present at the conference this year.  We will be entering six topics, listed below.  You can vote for one or all of the topics you think would be a good presentation.

“Have a Site that Forgets Users More than the Stock Market Changes? - Cookie/Session Problems Solved” – Aaron Wolfe and Lance Smith
Is your site getting lots of timeouts or are users complaining they are continuously logging in?  Are you ready to learn how sessions, cookies, and different browsers really work in an application?  Look no further.  In this track, we’ll start with the basics of sessions and cookies and go all the way through to more advanced session management techniques.  We’ll demonstrate how to deal with pesky persistence problems, debug those problems, and ultimately prevent unwanted session timeouts.  We’ll also show how session management can make or break an application and detail how to prevent major headaches by using server logs and other tools to your advantage.

“Got an SLA problem? ColdFusion Enterprise’s Load Balancing has the Solution so You Can Get Some Sleep at Night” – Aaron Wolfe and Lance Smith
Tired of emails/phone calls at 3 a.m. on Sunday morning telling you the server is down?  Rest easy, ColdFusion Enterprise’s load balancing, sticky sessions, and session replication features will come to the rescue.  In this session, we’ll show you the advantages and pitfalls of using these features without any expensive network hardware.  We’ll also show you how to properly load balance multiple ColdFusion instances while getting the best performance you possibly can by using web server stress testing tools. If you ever need to admin a ColdFusion server and like your personal life, you won’t want to miss this session!

“Inheriting Legacy Applications – Dealing with That Application from 1999” – Aaron Wolfe, Lance Smith, and Mike Harman
Just about every developer has had to deal with that “10 year old site” that’s been online since the dawn of the Internet (or at least your company’s Internet department).  We’ve all been there.  Many of us deal with legacy applications in our every day job—full of spaghetti code, no code formatting, no cfc’s, bad or no security, or all of the above.  In this session you will learn how to stop wrestling with those old sites and get them under control.  Not all of us have the budget, time, or luxury of building sites from scratch in a fancy new framework, and we’ll provide the knowledge to make old applications better.

“Not Just Another Security Presentation” – Aaron Wolfe, Lance Smith, and Mike Harman
A lot of talk has been going around lately about site security, yet many developers don’t feel they have the time or ability to add the necessary extra security to their sites.  Yet, every day sites fall victim to SQL injection, cross-site scripting and other common and not-so-common hacks and attacks.  With each passing day, hackers find new ways to bring even the biggest and best sites to their knees.  In this session, we’ll cover some simple yet effective methods of using ColdFusion to your advantage to make your site more secure in an increasingly more dangerous Web.

“Handling Errors with Error Handling” – Aaron Wolfe and Lance Smith
Most developers know the importance of having error handling on their site.  But, many do not know how extensible error handling can be and the control they have over it with the power and ease of ColdFusion. In this presentation, we’ll show you how to use Application.cfc and custom error pages to their full potential to handle custom errors, missing pages, and other common site errors without using <CFDump/> that cause massive emails in your Inbox.

“CF User Groups – Worth the Investment” – Lance Smith and Aaron Wolfe
Have you thought about starting a CF user group in your area, but aren’t sure how?  The benefits of managing a user group are numerous.  User groups receive many opportunities single individuals normally don’t, including access to training, materials, software, and reduced conference rates.  While it might seem like too much work for some, it is well worth the effort.  We’ll show you how to go about starting a user group in your area, what is involved once you start a group, and how to attract and keep members. We’ll also cover how to avoid common pitfalls that many failed user groups tend to fall into.

We will post a link to where to vote as soon as it's available.  Remember, the speaker(s) who get the most votes will win something extra special--possibly another free CFUnited ticket.  If you're interested in attending the conference for free this year, be sure and vote for us!

UPDATE:  The voting form is now available online! http://cfunited.com/go/survey/166

Summer Updates
Entry posted on Jul 21 by outlan2000

We apologize for not keeping the site more up to date.  Things have been very hectic for all of us this summer.  Between work, school, and life in general, we just haven't kept the site updated as much as we should have.  It feels like summer has almost breezed right past and will be over before we know it!  August is almost upon us!

That being said, we wanted to let everyone know that Aaron and I will NOT be speaking at CFUnited this year.  It's due to a lot of different circumstances and is unfortunate.  Hopefully, we will make it there next year, but this year just didn't work out.  If anyone out there is fortunate to make it out for the conference, you are in for a treat.  CF9 is coming out soon, and the conference will be packed to the gills with CF goodness all around.  Also, it's the best place to network and meet/talk/hang out with/drink beers with the best minds in the community and some of the brightest people on the Web today.

Just announced today is a CF conference in Raleigh, North Carolina (cfinnc.com).  I believe this is being put together by Dan Wilson and others from the TACFUG there in North Carolina.  I am going to attempt to be there (and possibly speak) since I'll be visiting my sister-in-law who lives in Greensboro at that time.  I will keep everyone posted.

We're working on some great topics for upcoming MVCFUG meetings.  We're working on getting some great speakers lined up and will be covering some topics in depth such as CF 9, ColdFusion Builder, JavaScript libraries, advanced ColdFusion, and more.  Be sure to attend our next meeting which will be announced soon.  It's sure to be another great presentation.

Remember, if you know someone who is a CF coder or is just interested in the Web, invite them to our next meeting!  Spread the ColdFusion love!!!

We've Been Quiet for a While!
Entry posted on May 18 by outlan2000 , tagged Development,Event,News

Yes, we know we've been quiet for a while.  Aaron and Lance spoke at cf.Objective() in Minneapolis (what an amazing experience), and things have been extremely hectic here at O'Neil & Associates.  We have been coding some great applications and trying to keep everything balanced.

As we enter the spring/summer season, we wanted to take a moment to remind everyone to please continue to present ideas for the group.  As more and more people are out for vacations and fun summer adventures, keep in mind that there are always great things going on with ColdFusion!  The MVCFUG has some wonderful presentations lined up for the rest of the year as well.

We hope to see everyone at this month's very special spring outing!  More details to come soon.

Welcome to a New Year!
Entry posted on Jan 10 by outlan2000 , tagged Development,News

2010 was a very successful year for MVCFUG, and we are looking forward a wonderful 2011.  Thank you to everyone who came out to the meetings and contributed to our success!  We'd also like to thank our sponsor, O'Neil & Associates, Inc. for continuing to support us and provide food, beverages, and facilities for our monthly meetings.  Lastly (but definitely not least), we'd like to thank Adobe for the swag and other things they have provided throughout the year.

Please be sure to continue to support MVCFUG.  Again this year, we are looking for enthusiastic speakers who would like to present on ColdFusion, HTML, CSS, or any Web-related technology.  Keep in mind that presentations can be anything from 15 minutes to an hour, and can be Powerpoint, code, hands-on, or a combination of all three.  Our meetings are very informal and casual, and there are no "dumb questions".

Stay tuned for more details on upcoming meetings for this year, and as always, don't forget about the Spring and Holiday networking events!  See you at the next meeting!

Welcome to the MVCFUG Adobe Community Site!
Entry posted on Nov 18 by outlan2000

Hello everyone!  The Adobe Community site is now live!  We are very excited about the possibilities of this site.  We will, however, also be keeping our primary stand alone address, mvcfug.org.  Please take a minute to Join the Group if you haven't already.

It's been an exciting past few months for the group as we've already had three meetings so far this year, and every month have had a great turnout!  We've had some great speakers, including Adam Haskell and Scott Predmore, and the presentation line up just keeps getting better.  We're working hard to see that 2009 is a great year for the MVCFUG.  However, a lot of our success depends on you, the attendees.  We need your input on what sessions you would like to see and what you think would be most beneficial and informative.

Very soon, we will have a survey or some type of utility available for you to voice what kind of presentations you would like, so keep an eye out for that.

Please keep in mind that we will not have a presentation the month of December.  Instead, we will be meeting at the Pub at the Greene Town Center in Beavercreek.  This will be an informal networking event and anyone is invited.
