Slightly OT: Help with Research Project
Thread posted on Jan 06 by Ed_Teller

Mr. Illustrator newbie here doing my first post, so pardon any ignorance which may follow.

I am doing a project for a local political organization looking to shut down all this birther nonsense about the President's birth certificate.  I saw one of your members, Jean-Claude Tremblay, was quoted in this piece:

http://tinyurl.com/3ezzs6j

saying that all the 'artifacts' of the scanned birth certificate are perfectly legitimate.  Here is the scanned BC so you can look at it yourself in Illustrator to see what I mean:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/rss_viewer/birth-certificate-long-form.pdf

What we want to do is to put together a YouTube video showing exactly how a scan like this can create artifacts like that.  So I would take some official document, put it on a scanner, use a particular scanning software, do the scan, then open the PDF in Illustrator to show all the layers.  This really would be 'proof' that the BC is legit, and it really won't take much time to do.

I guess the only thing I'm missing is what scanning software to use, and what the settings should be.  I'm also realizing I'm probably posting in the wrong group now because this is really a scanning software question.  Oh well, I hope you don't mind if I post anyway, since I've already taken the time to write this.  Probably a lot of smart people on this group, and smart people often have smart suggestions.

I'd prefer not to get into any political discussion here and just keep it on the techical issues.

Finally, I think this YouTube video will make quite a splash, but I'm not looking for any personal fame off of this, so if someone here wants to borrow the idea, I have no problem with that.  I'm sure I'll read about it in the press if you do it, so no need to post the link here.  I just want this thing done so there is one less distraction this year.

How to create a highlighted text 2
Thread posted on Jul 06 by iuri.kato

Hi everyone, I'm new here =), this is my 1st post.

I'm trying to do something in Illustrator CS5 but I can't find how to and even searching over the internet I still don't know how to make something that seems pretty simple: create highlighted texts.

You can do it in MS Word pretty easily and even in emails you have this option. I want to know if there is some way to make this sort of text in Illustrator. The only solution I found was to create a rectangle behind the text I'm trying to highlight, but that is 1) cheesy and 2) not practical at all because if i change, let's say, the size of the text, I'll have to change my rectangle as well.

I'd appreciate any help in this. I just can't find this sort of information, maybe i'm searching for the wrong words o.O!

ps: I uploaded an image showing what I'm trying to do.

Bristle Brush: make my own 1
Thread posted on Jan 06 by kbenusisk

When I place objects, select them and click on "Create New Brush" and choose "Bristle Brush" all we get is the existing bristle brush choices. How can I make my own from objects? (At this point is it a falsehood that we can create a bristle brush?)

every time I try to launch Ai it just crashes. I have uninstalled the entire cs4 program and reinstalled, all the other programs are still working just fine, but illustrator is just not working. I get the splash screen for like 2 seconds then it says the program stopped unexpectedly.

Hope you can help!

Cloned objects with simultaneously changes
Thread posted on Oct 29 by TheJJJ

Hi

How do I create (distributed, rotated, perhaps scaled) clones of an object that simultaneously change when the original object is edited?

Simple example: I have to design two identical objects that fit together like ying&yang. Every change to one of them has to have an live-effect on the clone so that the result can be seen live.

Or something like a kaleidoscope: identical objects distributed in a circle, which stay always the same when a single one (or an external master) is edited.

Greetings

Locked myself out of an AI 10 file by editing with Acrobat 9 2
Thread posted on Aug 20 by messydeer

Hi!

I recently relearned AI from several years ago. I have AI 10 and created some wiring schematics with it. I saved them in PDF, version 5, I believe. Later I opened this PDF file with Acrobat 9 and made the mistake of making a comment on it. So now I can't open it in AI to do any editing :-(   I think I shoulda saved everything in AI first, to prevent this. 20/20 hindsight.

So I'm hoping if I upload the PDF file, would somebody be able to convert it into something AI 10 could open? I know it can open up Acrobat 5.

Thanks,

Dan

PS: The wiring schematic is for the airplane I am building.

In Freehand there is a command to restore to its original shape an abject have been transformed. Is there something similar in ICS4?

Thanks!

file size to big - need to keep detail and elements tho - any other methods ? 1
Thread posted on Jun 29 by mcmelb

Hi

I hope somebody can shine some light on this for me - i have drawn a basketball in illustrator for a client, he wanted it realistic looking so i did each dimple individually, smaller in the distance, larger ones closer to the users eye level. Looks great. Thing is the file is huge! there's a lot of detail, does anybody know of anyway i can still achieve this look without killing my illustrator ? the dimples have got to be sharp and recognizable - and its got to stay vector, no raster - anything of anybody would be much appreciated

Cheers

Printing half-tones from Illustrator 5
Thread posted on Jun 02 by SjSings22

I'm a pretty heavy Illustrator user, but this one has me stumped.

I need to create a one-color image with a gradient that is going to be screen printed.

My screen printer wants the half-tones to be in vector art so he can open it in Corel-Draw. So I planned to print to a .pdf file with the correct half-tone settings.

I've tried everything I can think of and I just can't figure out what setting to use.

Please please help me!!!
