December 2011 - Meet and Greet

This meeting is a little different. It is just a general meet and greet to discuss our plans for 2012, and just to enjoy a fun night of meeting people from our community.

We used our December meeting as a general meet and greet, and to talk about the upcoming 2012 year.

We also discussed some of the highlights of 2011, including:

- Securing a great new venue, Cafe Koi, which is very supportive of the arts scene in Calgary and our group

- Bringing in a new  co-manager, Devon Sandboe, who is a very talented artist and a huge boost to the group

- Gaining a number of new members, some of whom are interested in helping the group to grow!

As usual, we had members from Mount Royal University (faculty and students), local freelance designers, and artists from other local groups.

Looking forward to a great 2012

Just throwing it out there, but these are some things that I'd like to discuss at the next meeting. Please feel free to add:

- Digital Matte Painting - I work in digital production artist for a software company, and I can see some parallels between what I do and what the Hollywood pros do. Hey, I ain't there yet, but it is inspiring to see what they do. I would like to have an open discussion for Photoshop techniques for Matte Painting.

- Digital Fine Art - I've heard a lot of great suggestion for working with brushes in Photoshop, and even some interesting techniques for Wacom pen tablets. Always interested in learning more.

- Photoshop and Fireworks - I'm a Fireworks newbie... I would love it if someone could share their experience with the software.

We are starting a new series of workshops for 2012.

The first of the series will focus on general and advanced skills for Photoshop & Illustrator.

Feel free to come with any questions or projects you are working on if you need some help with something

- General Introductions, as usual

- Chris Maric spoke about the direction of the group for this year and how we will begin a monthly open-concept workshop schedule

- Since students are beginning their Winter semester, we discussed again some of the new features of CS5.5 and how they are applicable to workflow

- Chris Maric presented a Q/A process for tips and techniques for both Photoshop and Illustrator

CDA Workshop #2 - Adobe Illustrator Techniques (Beginner to Intermediate)

We will work on a number of small projects to illustrate some of the main tools and functions in Illustrator.

I find that many people are hesitant to use Illustrator because they are not used to how the program works.

This workshop will be good for beginners and intermediate users.

Chris Maric - I've heard that people are interested in getting their feet wet with Illustrator, so this will be the topic of this meeting.

This will be an open discussion meeting. I am loving Illustrator CS4, so I probably have a number of things to say to that

Teach to Learn - As always

We are really starting to connect with different groups in the city. 

Please come and attend if you are interested

- General Introductions (great mix of students, teachers, industry people, and freelance designers)

- Chris showed his finished product for the Flash presentation for the National Music Centre (which he previewed at the last meeting)

- Devon showed a recent digital painting he had worked on

- Brad from Mountain View Printing explained what he does, and answered questions about printing

- Melina from iStockPhoto introduced their new project called Feast
