Lee Varis

Lee Varis is a leading author and the industry’s foremost expert on digital photography. Starting his career as a commercial photographer he segued into photo illustration creating album covers for music giants Warner Bros. Records and Sony Music, as well as advertising and key art for major motion pictures studios Paramount Studios, Fox, MGM and Sega, and national publications National Geographic and Newsweek. 

Early on Lee led training activities and imaging seminars on a nationwide traveling tour for Apple Computers. As an expert in color theory, Lee embraces the use of imaging software and technology to create digital images that transcend the original source materials. Over the past 20 years Lee has developed his skills as an award winning photographer but also has mastered the use of photoshop, lighting, special effects and color management. 

He has authored three books, "Digital Photography for Creative Professionals, detailing the basics of the use of new technology and software in digital photography, and a second best-seller, Skin: The Complete Guide to Digital Lighting, Photography and Retouching Faces and Bodies – now in a 2nd edition, as well as "Mastering Exposure and the Zone System for Digital Photographers". Each of these books have helped guide the pathway for many professional photographers working today. Can you REALLY paint traditional media convincingly in Photoshop (especially in the new CS6)? Absolutely YES! Easily? YES! Quickly? Your head will spin! To expressively paint, where your emotion, as well as your mind, get to come out and play, is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Especially when you can use a computer, a Wacom tablet and Photoshop to do all the laborious set up (and clean up!) that is typically involved with traditional medias like oils, watercolors or even pastels. All of these different media types will be demonstrated and simulated in this evening seminar led by award winning designer and artist/illustrator Jack Davis (who knows a thing or two about Photoshop as well ;).

And all these projects will start with a photograph - yes, Jack will be cloning sheep that night! These photographs (once first “enhanced” in Photoshop's Adobe Camera Raw) will be the “palette” of colors, tones and shapes that we will use in creating the masterpieces. And that means for these techniques no expert drawing skills are needed - though certainly if you can paint and draw traditionally then you will have an advantage when it comes to creatively “drawing outside the lines”! Come ready to be trained, entertained and inspired!

Scott will present a two-part session on compositing, starting with an overview of blending and blend modes for photo enhancements and illustration. In the first session, you'll get an overview of some of the more powerful ways to use blend modes for photography and illustration. In the second session, you'll see some of those and other techniques put to use in two very different composite projects.

Speaker Bio: Scott Valentine started with Photoshop working on optical and electron microscopy images, becoming a Subject Matter Expert at a national laboratory. With a degree in Physics and dual minors in Music and Theater, he has a unique perspective on balancing the technical with the artistic. He’s also a Photoshop prerelease tester, User Group Manager, and Adobe Community Professional, helping users get the most out of Photoshop for nearly ten years.
