The Table Project
Thread posted on Feb 09 by edbdbug

Just thought I'd bring to light a project that can be for the benefit of the whole group -- we're building two multitouch tables that will be networked to one another so that we can create some games and other fun tools/toys as a group

If you can donate even $10 or $25 to this to make it happen, it would be immensely appreciated!  (You'll also get your name imprinted on one of the sides of the table if you do!!!)

Thanks!!!

Flex Test Drive Opportunity
Thread posted on Jan 13 by steve_easley

Edward Sullivan wrote:

Hello Folks,

I wanted to put this call out to you folks prior to casting a wider net in the general community.

We are looking for 6-8 web developers who have *zero* prior experience with Flex who would be willing to step through our new Flex Test Drive tutorial/video series. You can think of this series as a hands-on feature tour. It is not designed to teach users Flex, but to give them a taste of Flex and what they can do with it. Ideally, if they like what they see, they would move on to the Flex in a Week video training.

The purpose of having a small group “test drive” this new series is to learn how people respond to the new Test Drive and to the transition from Test Drive to Day 1 of the Flex in a Week video training.

There is a time commitment involved in this: We expect it will take about 8 hours to step through the Test Drive, and ideally we would like for participants to also go on and step through Day 1 of the Flex in a Week training, and then provide us feedback on their experience.

The timing would be in early February (probably first weekend in February, with feedback due Feb 8).

To thank participants, those who sign up will receive a free copy of Flash Builder 4 when it is released.

If you are interested please shoot an email to Michael Koch, miko@adobe.com, as soon as possible to reserve your spot.

Hope everyone had a great holiday…take good care!

Intro to programming (ActionScript 3) class 5
Thread posted on Jan 06 by Chip Brown

The subject came up at the very end of the happy [a lot more than an] hour of maybe doing another multi week training session, this time focused on AS3 and the basics of programming.

I'm officially volunteering to organize the project if there is enough interest.

Also, either as part of this or as a separate class, who would be interested in a session specifically on migrating from AS2 to AS3?

Here's a rough idea of what I'm thinking for a course:

Programming for Artists - an introduction to the basic concepts of computer programming and how to apply them with ActionScript 3.0.

Don't just make something pretty, make it work.

Really want to know what that line of incoherent characters means instead of just copy/pasting from web tutorials with the vain hope that it will just work? Want to know when and how to use the three types of brackets (), [] & {} ? What the heck is an Array you say? Go beyond simply implementing found code or simple commands, and learn the basic concepts of how, why and when. Learn enough to make the documentation intelligible so that learning doesn't have to end at the end of the class.

Topics:

Core building blocks:
Overview of language constructs
Using Functions
Variables
Data Types
Writing Functions
Conditional Statements
Repeat loops
Arrays
Object Oriented Programming
Basic OOP
Using OOP
Event Broadcasting
Creating your own Classes

Using some ActionScript specific functionality
Graphics class
Transform class
Tween class

Formating conventions

Common Error Codes, and what they really mean

Prerequisites:

Basic Flash knowledge, very little time will be spent on how to use Flash. Know how to make a new layer, add a key frame and draw a circle? Then you know enough. Know the difference between a MovieClip and a Graphic symbol? Even better.

No prior programming experience needed.
Despite the title, you don't need to be an artist, just interested in learning how to program.

So, who's interested?
-Chip

Creating a Custom Flash Video Player (probably AS2)
Thread posted on Nov 06 by wesruv

So I'm going to try and make a custom video player for work. It's going to be streaming from a third party service, and I want it to be the only .SWF file that plays videos for the whole site. So I need to be able to pass it variables and all of that fun stuff.

Nothing earth shattering to some of you guys, I'm sure.

Here's my question, considering I want total control over the UI, and I'm pretty decent at AS2 and abysmal at AS3, what path do you think I should go down?

  • Customize one of the existing players/components (are there AS2 components?)
  • Create my own (is it that hard? Seems pretty straightforward)
  • Is there some 3rd party tool kit for doing this (which I doubt, but thought I'd ask)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you guys know any good tutorials or books, I'd love to hear about them.

-Wes

Columbus Digital Visualization Contest UPDATE 2
Thread posted on Oct 31 by steve_easley

Due to some technical glitches at our last presentation night, we need to move our Columbus Digital Visualization Contest from our November presentation night of Tuesday, November 24th, to a special presentation night of Tuesday, December 8th.  The good news is that you have more time to prepare a submission.

We have also altered the official rules to accomodate this date change.  Please take a look at them here: http://groups.adobe.com/posts/537b068eb5

We have also changed how to submit an entry.  We now have an online form that you can find here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dG9xUm51bzhVNUpTdTRrcEVubV9OUXc6MA

You do not have to resbumit an entry if you have already emailed your entry information to Mike.

Please take a look at the new deadlines and let me know if you have any questions.
