David Hepburn is the Owner and Creative Director of Hepburn Creative, Inc., a video production and photography company in San Diego. David has produced videos for over 12 years and has worked on productions around the world. From work on ABC's LOST television show, to work with national healthcare companies, to local businesses of all sizes in San Diego, David and his company focus on telling stories about brands, products, people and organizations.

Greg Bledsoe is a reporter, photographer, and meteorologist for NBC 7 San Diego. He's won multiple national awards from the National Press Photographer's Association, including twice being named the NPPA's Solo Video Journalist of the year in 2011 and 2012.  He is also a 9 time Emmy award winner for writing, editing, reporting, and photography, three of which were awarded recently in 2012.  In 2010 Greg was honored with the Golden Mic for editing. The Denver native is a graduate of the University of Colorado's School of Journalism who completed post-graduate work in meteorology through Mississippi State University's Broadcast Meteorology Program.

Director Michael Brueggemeyer is first and foremost a communicator. His twenty years of experience as a Director and Filmmaker have provided the unique perspective of observing over time what actually moves the audience to action, and what entertains them for a moment. His career began in film production, working as a Motion Picture Camera Assistant, then moving up to Director of Photography, then Director/Cameraman, then Producer/Director, and after the purchase of an editing system, he became an editor and compositor.

Agenda:
“The essence of cinema is editing. It's the combination of what can be extraordinary images of people during emotional moments, or images in a general sense, put together in a kind of alchemy.” --- Francis Ford Coppola
For this month’s meeting, we’re going to put technology aside and talk about the art of editing. There are many ways to tell a story, and who we are often reflects back in the choices we make while editing. Knowing when to cut and what to cut to is really more important than knowing how to use the technology.
We’re going to talk with three editors who work in different worlds, and explore why they make the edits they do, how they stay creative, and where they draw inspiration from. From wedding videos to news stories to commercials and short films, we’ll talk about what storytelling means to them. Each of them will show samples of their work and talk about their background, and then we’ll move into panel discussion where we’ll dive deeper into how they work.
This should be a really great meeting!!
We’ll also discuss the recent announcement from Adobe regarding Creative Cloud. Come with your questions.
We’ll do our monthly troubleshooting session, and do our monthly raffle which this time includes a full year of Creative Cloud…that’s right – it’s that time again!! This is our bi-annual raffle, so only group members who’ve attended at least one other meeting are eligible to win.
As always, please RSVP if you plan on coming. See you on Thursday!

February Meeting - Footage Ingest and Project Organization 1
Event posted on Feb 14 by Eric Addison

Date and Time: February 21, 2013 06:30 PM - 08:30 PM (GMT-8 Pacific Time US & Canada)

RSVP

google map
Agenda:

Last month we talked all about cameras, and got some great tips on shooting better video. But after you’ve shot your video, it’s time to edit. The way you set up your project can either make your editing experience easy and fluid, or it can make your job miserable and frustrating. This month, we’ll talk about ways to get your footage ingested, tips on setting up a project folder, and ways to handle all the media and project related files. We’ll look in depth at Prelude, and how it can help you ingest and organize for footage before you even open up Premiere Pro. We’ll also talk about file and folder organization so that when you open up that three year old project, everything connects and you’re not hunting for missing files.

We’ll do our monthly troubleshooting session, and have some cool stuff to raffle off as well. And we’ll have our “post-meeting debrief” as well.

Please RSVP if you plan on attending...and please try and do it while the group site is up. :)

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the official group website being rather…let’s say “flakey” as of late, please RSVP here, or if the site is down you can do it on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/284822378251101/) or Google+ community page (https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/115135520873454077141 ). Also, you can follow the group on Twitter as well - @SDPProUserGroup…if (when) the site goes down again, please use these to communicate and get group related updates. I will update them before the meeting next week with any info. And yes, it might be time to look into our very own group site…

Erik Naso began his career as the owner of a small video production company.  He then branched out to television news.  Quickly becoming a Chief Photographer at the CBS affiliate in his hometown of Bakersfield, California.   His next step was a move to Tucson, Arizona where he got his first taste of working for an NBC affiliate.  At KVOA Erik sharpened his skills in photography and editing, winning a number of Regional National Press Photographer Association Awards.

He then made the leap to Phoenix, Arizona to join a start up FOX station that eventually became an ABC affiliate.  KNXV known for “No Chit Chat and More News,” was a cutting edge fast-paced news environment.  And Erik was thrilled to be working with some of the most talented photographers and reporters in the country.   For his next move Erik headed across the country to Washington D.C.  During his two years with the WTTG Investigative Unit Erik won several Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Morrow nomination.   In 1999 he got the call to join the team of NBC 7 in his dream city of San Diego.

At NBC Erik moved from special projects and news to creative services, and that is where the fun began!  He was able take the time to set up beautiful shots with creative lighting, and have the luxury of putting it all together in the edit bay.  Today Erik is a DP, Director, Editor and Lighting Director with 24 years of experience capturing images that tell stories.  Erik has been honored with ten Regional Emmy Awards and four Telly Awards.  Today he enjoys sharing what he has learned with anyone who has passion for cinematography through his Blog  ErikNaso.com

Agenda:

Happy New Year everyone! To kick off the year, we’ve got Erik Naso coming in to talk about cameras and shooting tips and tricks. Erik is a very talented shooter, and in addition to giving you great advice on how to make your footage look better, he’ll also talk about choosing the right camera for the job. With so many different cameras and formats, it’s hard sometimes to know what’s the best for camera for certain situations. Erik will help you better navigate the sea of formats and styles.

We’ll do our monthly troubleshooting session, and also have some great raffle prizes. And plan on drinks and food afterwards at our usual spot.

As always, please RSVP if you plan on attending. Hope to you all this Thursday night!

Shooting Greenscreen

It used to be that shooting against greenscreen was something that only big budgets would allow. If you didn’t have Steven Spielberg size budgets you were out of luck. Over the years, the technology required to do the compositing has become much easier to use, and you now can shoot greenscreen even on a small budget. For this month’s meeting, we’re going to go over some low cost ways you can shoot greenscreen, what to watch out for, the basics of compositing, as well as some tools you can use to make your key better and more realistic. We’ll also show advanced techniques for keying when your greenscreen isn’t the best or your talent is wearing green.

We’ll talk about using Ultra inside Premiere Pro, as well as Keylight, Primatte, and Key Correct Pro in After Effects.

Agenda:

For this month’s meeting we are continuing to talk about plugins – namely, plugins you can’t live without. Most of us use plugins to help us make our projects look or sound that much better. With so many out there to choose from how can you know which fits your workflow best? Which is worth your hard earned money?

The goal for this meeting is to make it more interactive than most. If you’ve got a favorite plugin that you can’t live without, share it with the group. You can bring in a short project (or clip from longer project) where you’ve used it, or you can bring in your laptop and show us a short demo of how it works. The goal is to make this as interactive as possible – let’s learn from each other. All plugins are welcome so long as they work in Premiere Pro or After Effects - so if you use something in another NLE, you can still share it so long as it works with

Let me know if you want to share, and what it is you’ll be sharing.

We’ll do our monthly troubleshooting session, and we’ll be having our monthly raffle. Someone will be winning a copy of Red Giant’s Magic Bullet Looks 2 and a $500 gift certificate for Artbeats!

Please RSVP if you plan on attending, and if you plan on attending think about what your favorite plugin is.
