Tuesday July 27th Meeting – 6:30PM ITT Tech
We are meeting once again this coming Tuesday July 27th @ ITT Tech in room THEORY 3.
Schedule:
1. Using the AIR 2.0 NativeProcess API to do things that AIR can’t
Andrew Westberg (www.flexjunk.com) will be discussing a consulting project he worked on that needed a multi-threaded high performance C++ application to manipulate audio in near real-time. The client wanted to use AIR for it’s superior usability and design capabilities, but was limited by the Adobe Flash platform in other areas. Namely, limitations in audio file format support and performance for calculation-intense applications.
2. Building Modular Applications in Flex
Sam Souhrada (www.samsouhrada.com) will be discussing the benefits of building modular flex applications. The presentation will include a general overview and construction of a small sample application. Code samples will be posted after the presentation.
Modules let you split your application into several pieces, or modules. The main application, or shell, can dynamically load other modules that it requires, when it needs them. It does not have to load all modules when it starts, nor does it have to load any modules if the user does not interact with them. When the application no longer needs a module, it can unload the module to free up memory and resources. (From Adobe.com)
Hope to see you all there!

IndyFlex UG Meeting April 27 at ITT Tech - 6:30PM Topic: Cairngorm Continued, Flex 4 Deep Dive
Cairngorm is one of the primary open source frameworks for application architecture in Adobe Flex. We are going to be covering the second section of a five part tutorial.
Flex 4 Deep Dive - Our tour of Flash Builder 4 will begin with a review of the Flex Framework and then a look at the latest and greatest updates in the IDE, including Adobe Flash Catalyst, Flex Unit 4 Integration, debugger updates, and others. If we have time we will also cover connecting to a database using PHP and MySQL.

Indy's own Andrew Westberg will be our guest speaker on Feb. 23rd at 6:30pm. Many of you have expressed an interest in learning more about Degrafa, an open source, declarative graphics framework that is is compatible with Flex 2 and 3. Degrafa will be the focus of Andrew's presentation. He is giving another presentation at 360|Flex San Jose in March, titled How to talk “Satellite” – Throwing GPS data at Flex which he may also touch upon if time permits, especially as it pertains to Degrafa. This is a great chance to hear from a national calibre speaker on Flex.
Andrew Westberg is the president of Swift Mako Software, Inc. He consults full time for Simplified Logic working primarily on the Nitro-LM software licensing and encryption product. He enjoys going hiking with the family and riding his rip-stik at the skate park. Andrew has a BS in Computer Science from Western Illinois University.

Fellow Flex Fans,
Our next meeting is slated for Tuesday Jan 26th (6:30PM) at touchASoul in Broad Ripple (Click to view a Map). Sam Souhrada will talk about creating a flash component for Flex. The idea is it to give you a better understanding of how Flex and Flash communicate back and forth.
I am also working on putting together the new IndyFlex Users Group web site, based on the code given to me by the Toronto Flex Users Group. I intend to give a brief show and tell on how that site works.
After the meeting we will walk over to the Broad Ripple Brew Pub and have a pint. All are invited.
See you Tuesday night at 6:30!

Fellow Flex Fans,
November's meeting was a rousing success! If you didn't make it, you missed a great discussion on the finer points of creating the user interface in Rich Internet Applications. Our thanks to John Johnston and Peter Buick of Universal Mind for an excellent presentation. And congratulations to Brian Preston for winning a copy of Flex Builder Pro!
December's meeting is set for Dec. 10th at 6:30pm at Touch A Soul (Click to view a Map). We are joining forces with the IndyFlex Users Group, led by Scott Reynolds. Scott and I met in late November and thought it would be a good idea for our two groups to get to know each other since we are all Flash developers. This is a an opportunity to meet other developers and to discuss some important Flash basics, including how to use the Tool Panel. We are also interested in hearing your ideas and suggestions about IndyFlash since this is Scott's first meeting as manager of the group. Afterwards we will network informally at the Broad Ripple Brewpub, just across the street.
The introductions will begin at 6:30pm and the presentation around 7:00pm. The floor will open around 8pm for discussion and announcements, and the Brewpub will be waiting for us around 8:30pm. Scott will also be giving away various Adobe items, including software. Here is the link to the IndyFlash User Group: http://groups.adobe.com/posts/7c3b6d4b10
Social networking takes on new meaning in December as there is also another joint user group event planned for Dec 15th. Join us for a holiday happy hour at the Rathskellar in downtown Indy from 6pm till 8pm. Memberso of these Adobe groups are coming together to shake up the pale dry ginger ale!

Looking forward to seeing you in December!
