Details: Visual music refers to methods or devices which can translate sounds or music into a related visual presentation. After we view some examples, we will be exploring how to recreate visual music in After Effects using graphical shapes, movement, space and color. First, we'll be importing music, and I'll show you how to analyze waveforms for animation, as how to link the motion of objects to the amplification of sound using expressions. We will go over the (often ignored but awesome) shape layers in AEFX, and I will show you how to push and pull their potential to achieve some compelling looks. Through out the class we will be using basic keyboard shortcuts, as well working between Photoshop and AEFX.

Stephen Fitzgerald - http://mono-motion.com

Agenda:

NO RSVP REQUIRED

For our second AEPDX meeting we will switch it up from overall method to nitty gritty keyframing and technique. November's meeting was art, December's is science.

Stephen Fitzgerald will be presenting a step-by step dissection of the two pieces created for the Cut & Paste competition. Workflow and process will be discussed starting with initial concepts then shooting, tracking, 3d, and yes, After Effects compositing and animation. Some problem solving techniques used may be worth taking home.

The presentation format will be very open. Any questions can be asked on-the spot, and we can move quickly or drill into more technical bits for further detail.

Full Adobe Creative Suite 4 of your choice (Master Collection is not an option) valued up to $2,100 to only attending group members.

The Portland After Effects Bumper Project.

Here is a chance to make some stuff together. Syephen thought it might be a cool idea for a project to collaborate and share some ideas.

The project would be to create a series of small logo animations or logo bumpers for the user group, and to use the animations as a sand box to experiment.

The creative brief is simply "After Effects + PDX". What small stories, images, animations, or other visuals could convey those two items together?

Stefan Nadelman from Bent Image Lab

Stefan worked as lead animator for Connected: An Autoblogography About Love, Death & Technology. As lead animator, Stefan was solely responsible   the look and feel of all the original animations produced for the film. If a section or line of narration could not be filled with verité or stock footage, then Stefan would be needed to step in with animation. The prolonged production period for the film allowed Nadelman to handle all the animation work, as opposed to hiring help. Stefan worked remotely from home in Portland while the larger production was based in San Francisco.
About Stefan
Son of a wedding videographer and photographer, Stefan received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Iowa State University in 1994 and began working in New York City as a print graphic designer. He transitioned to web design and then web animation not only for interactive design but for film.
In 2000, Stefan's first film, "Latin Alive" was included on the Best of Resfest DVD volume 1.
By 2003, Stefan left the world of web-based animation for that of film and television. Shortly after, his next film, "Terminal Bar", won the Jury Prize for short film at the Sundance Film Festival.
Among a variety of personal, collaborative, and commercial work, he has directed and animated shorts with Robert Smigel for Saturday Night Live's TV Funhouse, a music video for Menomena's Evil Bee, and the viral mini-epic short film about war called Food Fight.
Stefan continues to direct and animate for food, film, and fun.

Agenda:

About the movie

For centuries, we’ve been declaring our independence. Now It’s time for us together to declare our Interdependence. Director Tiffany Shlain’s new documentary film,CONNECTED, is a moving eye opening exploration into what it means to be “connected” in the 21st century.  CONNECTED touches the heart as deeply as it provokes the mind.  Watch the trailer here -- http://youtu.be/eQmoRIVJnzQ

See why CONNECTED is the most anticipated film coming out of the Sundance Film Festival this year.

CONNECTED opens theatrically on Friday, Sept 23rd at the Fox Tower in Portland OR.  A great turnout means a longer run at your theater.  Spread the word and bring your friends and colleagues opening weekend.  Get connected.  Come declare your interdependence.

CONNECTED is a personal film with universal relevance, a combination documentary and memoir.  It follows a life-changing year in Tiffany’s life where her very understanding of connection was challenged by her father’s battle with cancer and her own high-risk pregnancy.  Tiffany’s experience is translated into an enlightening cinematic journey with insights that show us the extraordinary web of interconnection that links us to each other and to our world.

Al Gore says, “Tiffany demonstrates, with lyrical simplicity, our interdependence on one another and the interconnectedness of humanity with all life on earth.”  The Hollywood Reporter calls CONNECTED “A personal yet universal story about the Internet Age… a highly energized romp through a myriad of ideas about where the human race is headed.”  Tiffany Shlain is a celebrated filmmaker and founder of the Webby Awards.  Her lifelong love/hate relationship with technology serves as the springboard for this involving meditation on what truly makes our world go ‘round.
