DMA|LA April 2010 Overview
Entry posted on Apr 21 by komaruyama , tagged Event,Event,Design

By James DiGiovanni

There was a packed house at the DMA / LA meeting last night. The Adobe CS5 launch was highly anticipated and well attended. And we had a good look at the new CS5 Premiere Pro and After Effects.

At work, most of my time is spent in After Effects and C4D so I always forget how cool Premiere really is. At my facility, the Editors do most of the cutting in the Avid and I bring in reference clips and then create my animation and composites in AE. This demo reminded me that I really need to reintroduce Premiere into my work pipeline.

Cool things to remember about Premier for Motion Designers: The Dynamic Linking between After Effects and Premiere and the fact that you can import layered PSD documents.

Michael Coleman,  Product Manager After Effects @dmala

Of course the big reveal was After Effects CS5. Mike from Adobe went into a lot of detail about the 64bit memory processing and and some of the free 3rd party plugins bundled with the new package.

I would like to have seen a little more info on the Mocha mask tracking and how to import back into AE.

The big new feature is Rotobrush, which I think is a game changer. If anyone is familiar with the Photoshop plugin TOPAZ LABS: REMASK, it is similar except that it interprets each frame based on your original ‘Keep / Delete ‘ selection.  I have to get my hands on it and see if it actually does what I have seen in the demos. Mike was fair in claiming that there will always be some clean up involved and it is not perfect. Still, it looks like a giant time-saver.

We had quite a few people sign up for this month's meeting.  Is one of these people you?  If it is, COME SEE ME TONIGHT!  These people signed up for the April meeting and were #1, #50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 in the Eventbrite registry

Sam Griffiths / Theresa Hoey / Robert Cornero / Swako Iizuka

Florence Merl / Peter Crandal / Manny Skiles / Adriana Torres

CONGRATS TO

Robert Cornero who sought me out last night (I was kinda hard to miss)

Shout out to Clayton Root who took the trouble to cut out his ticket into the shape of a ticket.  Usually people just print 'em out with all of their email header garbage on it.  Clayton printed it out full color, and clipped it to taste.

Clayton is a regular member of dmala, and, despite his stern avatar, is friendly and involved.

Honorable Mentions:

Recyclers, Morgan Mendieta and Anthony Barcelo printed out their tickets on some of their scrap artwork printouts.

Anthony recently did some work related to CLASH OF THE TITANS

Awesome User Photo
Entry posted on Apr 19 by komaruyama

Group member, olive4u, has an awesome little icon for their avatar.

Dunno who this is, or where in the world they are, but fill it out a little more, and if you're in Los Angeles - come see me tomorrow at the meeting for something cool for the avatar that made me laugh this morning.

--For the rest of you--

Have you updated your AUG avatar?  Doesn't have to be a photo of yourself, but show us something creative.
Does the generic, bland, nondescript graphic really personify you?
I didn't think so.  Get in there and change it up!

HEY IT'S NEW!
Entry posted on Apr 14 by komaruyama

Yeah - it's new.  If you're here, you've noticed that the Adobe Groups pages have undergone a major facelift.... which means all of our faces are gone.

That gives us a chance to get better pictures in for our avatars... right?  Make sure you DONT see the JOIN THIS GROUP button on the main page, cuz that means that you're a member of our group.  Put your face up, and remember your user name.

We'll see you on Tuesday!

whew. :)

If you would like to weigh in on the issue of public support of the arts in LA, here FYI is a campaign in support of the City's theaters and arts centers through which you can make your thoughts known to your local elected official.
Here is the link for the campaign:   http://www.artsforla.org/take_action/culturalcenters

A VERY SPECIAL THANKS to venue defenders Ken Carlson of www.acfcla.org/ and Michael Horton of LAFCPUG (Los Angeles Final Cut User Group).  Both showed up today (Monday) to defend our meeting venue from the city's door closers.   Michael's group has been our partner group since we started.    He also runs the SUPERMEET at NAB in Las Vegas.  Hurry and get your tickets.  It's the best networking event there. Adobe is sponsoring again this year too! (check event discussions for more)

It's NAB time again, and our friend Dave Basulto from FILMMAKING CENTRAL is going to be at the show, streaming the good stuff from the POST MAGAZINE booth.

Dave didn't just come empty handed, he also brought with him a set of HOLLYWOOD CAMERAWORK DVDs. They're about $330 regularly online, but you can get 40% OFF when you use FCENTRAL as your checkout code.

There is also a series for VISUAL EFFECTS FOR DIRECTORS which you can also get a 40% discount when you use the code during checkout.

If you're in 'Vegas during NAB, post some pictures from his live podcast here on our discussion board.  We'll come up with a prize for the best photo (or link to Twitpic).  ;)

Need help getting into the show for FREE?  Use the code PC07 (that's a zero) and get your Exhibits Hall Pass today!  There are tons of experts and mini-sessions on the show floor.  It's worth it.
