January's Meeting

I am going to try to log in each month after our meeting to recap how things went. Tonight we had four new people drop by to check out how we roll. There were a number of announcements. We shared images of the letter 'R' for our poster on the alphabet that will be coming after the letter 'Z'. Our meeting topic was the restoration of a member's two professional photographs of her grown children that had badly faded. The images were about 16 x 20 and thus too large for a normal flat bed scanner to scan in one step. So multiple steps were used and the results were put together using Photoshop. Teresa Anderson lead the discussion in how to use Photoshop to import the multiple images as layers of one image, rather than individual images. This tip was followed by others dealing with masks and applying a change to multiple masks at once. Several people did not know that the order of layers helps to apply the changes to all layers under the new filter. After a break that included setting up a photo copying stand with lights at 45° angle to the copy on the stand. More explaination about kelvin (Color Temperature is not an indicator of lamp heat.) Richard led a good discussion with excellent examples of images shot with the copy camera set up and also scanned. Everyone could see the pros and cons of each method. Now we will be providing files of the image to members. Everyone is encouraged to try to restore the image and see if they can do a credible job... even if it is the first time to try; everyone who tries and brings in a thumbdrive with their efforts or emails them to Bob will get two extra tickets for the June drawing. So now you have your orders. I'll put the files up here later. Check back for an update.

Our next meeting is going to explore photographed image vs scanned image. We will compare how the two methods of acquiring a digital format stack up. Teresa will scan the subject and bring in all the info on her scanner: make, model, dpi settings, etc. Another member will photograph the image. The photography aspect will be done at the meeting. We can see the lighting, settings, etc. Then we will compare for trueness in colors, textures, etc. Then we will begin the real part of this... the restoration of an image. Hope you can make it. The files will be available for members to work with if they bring a thumbdrive or their computer. We will be using these files this month and next to see how individuals would accomplish restoring the image. (There is no single way... there are many. No right or wrong) Join us.

Our August meeting will continue with the sharing of CS6 features. Creating a repeating pattern for the web or print will be discussed. The Letter for the month is "M" and to help finish the project sooner we are adding "N". So that's two letters for August. Bring a friend and earn an extra ticket in the biannual software drawing. Who knows the ticket your friend represents could be the difference between winning or not winning.

July 10th will be our next meeting. The letter "L" is for this month. If you're new, we take photos that represent each letter. Then we are going to create a poster using the photos for the alphabet, with credit for each member whose image is used. Bring in your "L" photo in July.
Roxanne Burns our newest software winner is going to get CS6 Premier. She will be teaching this software this fall in the public schools. Hurray for Roxanne.

You can now find us on Facebook. We have more active discussions there and posting may be easier for some. You'll still need to request to join, but drop by. We are busing planning a great winter's worth of activities for members... workshops will be listed soon, presented by our own Adobe Certified instructor, Teresa Anderson. Our focus for the next few months is to be InDesign. We continue to give tips and tricks for Photoshop and each month we have the photo submissions for the "Letter of the Alphabet" February's letter is "G" (I think... check out FB, it should know for sure or ask there.)
Aperature vs iPhoto

I asked a question at one of our previous meetings about Aperture and how it relates to iPhoto. It replaces iPhoto and Apple has a good video about it at:
http://www.apple.com/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/
Also, you can get a free trial at http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial
As I mentioned in the meeting you can buy it through the Mac App store for $79.99.

User Group Managers' Summit 1

In October I am paying my own way and hotel to LA to attend a meeting for Adobe managers. It is quite expensive, but I feel Adobe benefits me by giving me software to run the meeting, so I'll put in some money to also meet those needs. But even as I write this I am of the opinion that our group could be more. Could meet needs better. Could provide more training. Could show more examples of what members want to see. But I'm at a loss. I need to know what YOU, our members WANT. Please chime in and tell me what would "ring your bell". How can SSAUG help you to meet your goals in being a member of this group?

Book Review: How to Cheat in CS5
Thread posted on Aug 18
by terpsichorian
Steve Caplin has once again produced a book for hobbyists and professionals that make a desired outcome easier to achieve. As an amateur and a hobbyist I found the introduction very helpful. The author understands and wants those who can use a little review to be able to walk right in and use the tools. The introduction gives the reader an opportunity to practice using the tools at leisure and then begin the chapters as one is ready. Caplin teaches the keyboard shortcuts for every tool and does a helpful job of describing why things are done in the order he prescribes.
Once the introductory lessons are completed the reader has, as always, two choices. The first is to simply work the book from front cover to back and the second is to choose a project of interest. The introduction actually consists of the first four chapters and it is strongly recommended by Caplin that everyone regardless of experience work through them. The techniques of the first four chapters are referred to throughout the remaining chapters and so are essential. Caplin suggests even if the reader is familiar that each at least go through the pages in a chapter in order even if all the chapters aren’t read. Review is always beneficial to everyone and, if one pays attention, a new and possibly important detail can be learned.
The book is fun and the results are rewarding. Finally, if one gets stuck, Caplin has a web site for posting questions and getting answers from other users. This community is for both Caplin’s book subjects as well as any Photoshop matter. Once you are ready, there is a weekly challenge posted. Thanks, Steve, now we can never complain of being out of interesting things to do!
