New member with question 1
Thread posted on Nov 22 by okcss

Hi, my name is Keith and my background is in journalism and Web design. I'm trying to move back into Web design by learning CSS.

My first question involves this rule I created. The size and color work fine but the Helvetica value does not. Can't figure it out...

p.fnt1 {color: green; font-size: 130%; font: Helvetica;}

Entire style sheet attached.

What resources do you use?
Thread posted on Apr 07 by AnneVhale

I'm seeing quite a few links in the Welcome thread. Let's see what we can come up with if we give them their own space. Just like the thread says, what resources are you using to learn from?

http://www.w3schools.com/

This is a good site for a code newbie such as myself. If you aren't familiar with code or CSS, it may help to go through the tutorials here.

http://envato.com/

This is becoming a fairly large resource. I tend to think of it as a Ezine. It's a site dedicated to tutorials. They have several sections: Vector, PSD, Flash, Net, Audio and Aftereffects. Anyone can create and submit a tutorial for the masses. They even offer 150$ if they post what you submit. I'm finding it a good site to learn some new tricks.

IE 8 and CSS 2.1 2
Thread posted on Mar 31 by sirpatrick33

All through the beta, we developers have heard how IE8 would be standards compliant (at last). Now that it has been officially released, what is the consenus among developer? Did MS finally come around or have they missed the mark yet again?

Just wanted to let everyone know that I added a blog post called "Weekend Reading" -- something I'd like to suggest we implement each week. I'm not sure what everyone has their notifications set to, but it might be a good idea to subscribe to the blog feed (just click on the Subscribe icon that appears next to the word "Blog" in the Resources section of the Group's Summary page) as I intend to use blog posts as the primary way to communicate to the group.

What was your "a ha!" moment? 2
Thread posted on Mar 19 by Mordy Golding

Many people have misconceptions of what CSS is. Many think it's just like InDesign's Paragraph Styles feature, but that's only one small portion of it. Many others are baffled when they try to grapple with things like the cascade and specificity. And so on.

But at some point, a light bulb goes on in your head and you "get it". Some "a ha" moment that when you look back, is that defining moment when you made sense of it all. Maybe you didn't figure everything out then, but you understood what everyone else was talking about when they told you "you gotta learn this CSS thing...".

So if you've been using CSS, please share your "a ha" moment. Maybe your experience can help others get on board more quickly. More importantly, we can all learn a nuance or aspect that maybe we weren't aware of before.

What tools do you use? 16
Thread posted on Mar 18 by Mordy Golding

Being that CSS itself is "just code", you don't need anything more than a simple text editor in order to use it. That being said, there are also several tools (i.e. Adobe Dreamweaver) that have features built in that make it easier to use CSS, sometimes visually.

Personally, I am using Dreamweaver CS4 for my web development, and so for a majority of the CSS that I'll be doing, that's where I'll be.

What tools will you be using on this journey?

:) Mordy

The CSS Learning Group WELCOME RECEPTION 28
Thread posted on Mar 17 by Mordy Golding , tagged Sticky

Hi there! Please introduce yourself to the group!

My name is Mordy Golding. My background is in art production, but in print and in web. Currently, I do freelance design and I am an industry author, trainer, and consultant. I have written several books on Adobe Creative Suite and on Adobe Illustrator, and I am also the author of several video training titles over at Lynda.com. A few years ago, I was the product manager for Illustrator at Adobe.

In my own freelance design work, I've been pushing off learning CSS. I've picked up several books on the subject over the last 2-3 years, but rarely do I make it past the first 2 or 3 chapters. I'm extremely familiar with the BENEFITS of using CSS, and I totally understand what is so wonderful about it, but until recently, I never really used it to actually build anything. Last week, I did build my first site using CSS for styling and layout, and it was an experience. But I'm still learning, and hungry for more.

:) Mordy
