Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player Announced
Entry posted on Nov 18 by

Title: Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player Announced
Entry: Today Adobe has announced the new Flash Lite 3.1 distributable player.
The distributable player solution enables developers to create rich applications for the latest version of Flash Lite and directly distribute their content to millions of open OS smartphones providing a better on-device user experience. The solution mimics the successful Flash Player desktop model of content-triggered downloads for applications (rather than web-browsing). Developers and content providers no longer need to worry about whether the device has the latest Flash Lite runtime.
More: To deliver your application using the distributable player solution:
- Create
Use Adobe Flash CS4 Professional and Adobe Device Central CS4, with corresponding updates, or Adobe Flash CS3 Professional and Adobe Device Central CS3. Learn more.
- Package
Improve end user experience and discovery by using the Adobe Mobile Packager to package applications into Symbian and Windows Mobile installable files that download the latest Flash Lite Distributable Player over-the-air (OTA) if required.
- Distribute
Reach millions of users with direct-to-consumer distribution or expose your application(s) through Adobe AppZone when you distribute through new off-deck aggregator partners. Learn more. Get started - Apply to the private beta.
This is a great step forward for Flash Lite , and hopefully will help to overcome some of the fragmentation issues that the platform has been experiencing of late, with firmware updates and the like.

Title: Notes from the Mobile Tips and tricks Flash Lite session @ MAX.
Entry: Hartti Suomela from forum nokia has made post of his notes from the Tips and tricks Flash Lite session @ MAX.
For the full post, click here.
Below are a couple of the notes he made:
- Make the app work first (before making it pretty) - remember to also add Exit button
- Optimize your loops - negative while-loops are fastest of all, avoid function calls in loop condition (instead run it once before loop if value does not change)
- Test automation through Device Central- create a device set, and run the same test on all devices (you could also take a screenshot of every test run for examination)
- Device profiling - test the devices with FPS monitors or use the Device Central profiling features
- Extending Flash Lite (will be available Adobe MAX) - possibilities: KuneriLite, Janus, Flyer, Sony-Ericsso's Capuchin, SWF2Go, there is also an article
Congrats to Dale, darren, Scott and alessandro (50+ attendees), wish i'd been able to attend :)

Flash Lite platform services for S60 5th Edition - sample files

Title: Flash Lite platform services for S60 5th Edition - sample files
Entry: A couple of weeks ago, nokia gave an eSeminar showcasing the ability for Flash Lite to access device API's (such as GPS, sensors, contacts, filesystem etc) via actionscript on nokia handsets running S60 5th edition (check out the new nokia 5800 'tube' touchscreen device). Read the rest of the post for more details, and to view the recording and download sample files.
More: To access the API's via AS , it's as simple as importing the nokia AS class libarys ( com.nokia.lib.* ) and then using the service class to create specific service interfaces. (see slide capture below) As you can see, this is a massive difference to the viability of the flash lite platform for creating truly integrated mobile applications that can take advantage of the mobile platform. Although this could be done previously with 3rd party applications, this is a much simpler solution. Info snippets :
- Platform services is currently only supported by 5th editions phones (i.e 1 :) ) , but it was hinted at in the seminar that there would be some back porting for older handsets
- Flashlite support for google android handsets was hinted upon by peter from adobe
- some simple examples were shown of location, messaging and contacts api. The code was short and sweet
- the demo phone used by nokia had a copy of dojo monkey on the desktop. Kudos to dale ;)
