December Meeting Slides & Recap
Entry posted on Dec 05 by Chris W. Griffith

The slides that I presented at December's meeting are available here. We will not hold a meeting in January. Look for a survey email from us shortly to try to define what topics we can cover in the coming year.

As mentioned, Flash Builder 4.7 was officially released. You can request a free serial number if you own 4.5/4/6 via this form. Creative Cloud subscription members can access the new version via the Adobe Application Manager.
Adobe has also released a public preview of Adobe Scout. This was formerly known as Project Monocle, Adobe Scout is a new profiling and optimization tool for Flash Player on desktop and mobile to help you get the best performance possible. For a limited time, Adobe Scout is available as a free preview before commercial release! They also released an Adobe Gaming SDK and Flash C++ compiler. Visit http://gaming.adobe.com/getstarted/ for more information.
Also, Adobe is hosting Create Now on December 11 @ 10am. You can register at http://www.adobeeventsonline.com/createevent/

November Meeting: Edge Animate
Entry posted on Oct 22 by Chris W. Griffith

Come join the San Diego Adobe Developer User Group on Monday Nov 5th at 6pm as we present an evening of animation and interactivity.
First we will take a look at Edge Animate (formerly known as Edge). Adobe Edge Animate is an all new tool from Adobe which seeks to enable the authoring of motion and interactive experiences through HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript in a manner consistent with other Creative Suite applications.
Next we will take a brief look at create.js. Developed by Grant Skinner and team, this extension for Flash Professional allows users the ability to export their Flash animations to run solely using HTML/CSS/JS.
As always we will discuss some of the latest news and rumors in the tech world.
Hope to see you there for this animated meeting!

New Publishing and Optimization Features:
- Publish to web: Preview 5 has an option to specify if jQuery should be packaged with the composition, or downloaded from a CDN to produce lighter code and improve caching.
- Down-level browser support: Define a fallback state of a composition for non-HTML5 browsers like IE8 and below.
- Preloader improvements: Choose what gets shown during the preloader (before the framework, jQuery, or composition is loaded).

Emphasis on animation:
- Timeline: We made several significant improvements to the timeline that make composing animations much easier and faster, such as an easier to use Pin (formerly the Mark) and smarter playback behavior.
- On-stage tools: New clip and transform tools make it easier to manipulate objects and create animation effects.

Many other enhancements:
- Improved symbol functionality, stage editing options, the ability to swap images, more intuitive contextual menus, many bug fixes, and much more have been added to preview 5.

The Future of SDADUG
Entry posted on Dec 22 by Darius Fattahipour

Thanks to everyone who came out to the December meeting with SDFUG! It was great to hear everyone's thoughts about the recent events.

Going forward, SDADUG and SDFUG will be co-hosting meetings and expand beyond the Flash Platform. There will still be a focus on Adobe-based solutions, but look for presentations on jQuery, Appcelerator, Scala, HTML5. As always, if you have a topic you want to talk about, let us know and we are happy to give you the podium! Also, we will try to have a few hands-on sessions.

Additionally, we are going to try to socialize up the meetings some. The first part of the meeting will be spent doing general introductions and networking. Then we will have a 'News of the Month' section, then about 7pm we will have the main presentation.

Remember, no meeting in January! We will be back in February discussing What's New in Adobe AIR 3. Hope to see you there and have a happy and safe holidays!

MUST READ -- UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF FLEX

JUDGEMENT DAY
Entry posted on Nov 13 by Darius Fattahipour

Adobe's bombshell this week regarding Flash has the whole development community in flux. IMHO, I had a feeling the Flash/Flex was headed towards the legacy app bin but believed that it would be a gradual process as with other legacy technologies. I don't know if there's actually a precendence for what Adobe has done but regardless, it has far reaching impacts on all of us.

If you haven't heard about the future of Flex yet, this post is a must read: http://blogs.adobe.com/flex/2011/11/your-questions-about-flex.html

As for the future of SDADUG, I haven't heard from Adobe as yet on what's next. Obviously, there will be changes and I promise to keep you updated.

I wanted to start this post to provide a forum where our local community could share their thoughts. If there's interest in having a meeting, maybe in conjunction with the San Diego Flash User Group, to strategize/vent, please let me or Chris know.

Hang in there, Adobe Developers. Remember, we all have great transferrable skills and there's a lot of value in all that we've learned with Adobe technologies over the years.

-Darius
