Monthly Meetings

Hi All,

Monthly meetings are currently on hold until the caretaker mode has been lifted and we know if we've got a change of Government. At this point in time the next meeting will be in September, James can you ping me on this please, as I may have to attend remotely via a Connect session.

I have been very busy working on some amazing Flex/ColdFusion/PDFLib/InDesign Server apps. I will seek permission from my employer to demo some of these apps for you as they are really quite complex and tie in to a custom built ColdFusion backend ordering system.

Canberra Google Wave Hackathon Day

Canberra Google Wave Hackathon Day - **This is not an ACTAPUG event, although we fully support and promote it in the spirit of community**
Saturday 8th August

PROGRAM:
9:30am      Registration
10:00am     Talks

A  presenter from Google (details available soon) will give an
introduction to the Wave API.

If you have already been developing for Wave, please consider giving a
short presentation about what you have done (doesn't have to be a
formal presentation).

12:00 pm    Brainstorming Lunch (BYO or we will take orders & payment
for pizza at registration)
 1:00 pm     Hacking
 5:00 pm     Demos
 7:00 pm     Head out for dinner at restaurant (at your own cost).

LOCATION:  Room N101, CIST Building, ANU, North Road, Canberra

You must register if you wish to attend so that a Google Wave
Developer sandbox account can be created for you.  Registrations will
close on Tuesday, 4th August so that the accounts can be created.

This day is being organised by volunteers who are interested in Google
Wave development and thought it would be useful to have a Google Wave
developers day in Canberra. Please indicate if you are willing to
assist with organising and running the day. Contact brenda@moon.net.au

We will be providing WiFi internet access, but you will need to bring
your own computer. Please have a look at the developer information on
the Google Wave site (http://code.google.com/apis/wave/) as an
introduction.

July User Group Meeting 2

Hi All,

I am trying to organise speakers for this months meeting, and have approached Anthony Steve from the Department of Innovation to give a case study on business.gov.au and Smartforms, as well as Stafford Cooper from the same Department to give a presentation and overview on the Australian Government Online Services Portal (AGOSP).  I expect that they will be more than happy to present, however I do expect it to be a longer than normal meeting and intend on starting it earlier than usual at around 4pm.

I also suspect that our usual venue will not do and will need to sort a new venue, which means I probably need to source sponsorship as well.  Adobe do sponsor the group for catering to $250 which will not be enough for this meeting, so if anyone in the group has ideas regarding venue or sponsorship please contact me.

I will be driving attendance to this together with AGIMO as they expressed an interest in supporting the group and attending User Group meetings to increase Smartforms awareness and usage across Government.  I find this extremely exciting and hope that you all do too.

Creative Suite 4 Roadshow hitting Canberra

Howdy folks,

Just in case any of you guys aren't signed up to get Adobe event announcements, I thought I would mention that the Creative Suite 4 roadshow is coming to town on the 10th of March 2009.

Here is a grab from the email.

"The day will begin with a keynote address from a Marketing Professional in a leading company ie. your customer. Following that an industry expert will discuss and debate "The Future of Digital"*.

Then we'll start our deep dive into the Adobe Suites and products, rounding out the day with an "Adobe Feature Jam" where you can pick up some great Tips & Tricks.

Adobe LiveCycle Enterprise Suite 1

I was fortunate enough today to witness yet another awesome demonstration of the Adobe LiveCycle Enterprise Suite and it's seamless use of technologies to deliver a user experience only limited by your imagination.

I have a tentative date booked with Mark Szulc, Senior Technical Consultant Adobe Systems Asia Pacific to deliver a demonstration and QA session to the user group on the 4th February.  You will truly see the entire Adobe delivery platform come to life as Mark weaves his magick.  Stay tuned for more details.

Adobe on Accessibility

Adobe participates on the Telecommunications and Electronic and Information Technology Advisory Committee (TEITAC), http://webaim.org/teitac/ providing recommendations for updates of accessibility standards issued under Section 508 http://www.section508.gov/ of the United States Rehabilitation Act. The PDF file format is an ISO Standard (ISO 32000-1) http://www.iso.org/iso/pressrelease.htm?refid=Ref1141 . PDF includes support for people with disabilities that is comparable to other formats, such as HTML. Authors addressing accessibility can use Adobe products to create PDF files with accessibility enhancements for documents, forms, and interactive content that accommodates visual, mobility, and cognitive disabilities.

Flash creates accessible web, desktop and eLearning content that includes rich media. A core set of accessible UI components is provided in Adobe Flash to enable accessible application development. These components automate many of the most common accessibility practices related to labeling, keyboard access, and testing to ensure a consistent user experience across rich applications.

Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader supports accessibility in a variety of ways. Features include compatibility with assistive technologies such as screen readers or screen magnifiers, built in accessibility features such as easy font resizing, contrast settings, keyboard navigation, built in text to speech with the "Read Out Loud" feature.

The Adobe Flash Player displays Adobe Flash content in web browsers and Adobe Flex applications. Flash Player works with assistive technologies to accommodate users with visual disabilities. It also provides keyboard access for users with mobility impairments and support for users with hearing impairments through the ability to display subtitles and captions.

Adobe believes issues of accessibility around PDF and Flash are a direct result of "Authors" of content, not correctly leveraging and using the many methods and best practice at their disposal, within the Adobe applications to deliver accessible content. It is this lack of use/ignorance that produces "less than accessible" content.

The Accessibility Resource Center http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/ provides numerous materials to aid developers and designers in the efficient creation of accessible content.

There is a wealth of Best Practice documents at: http://www.adobe.com/enterprise/accessibility/training.html that speaks to creating, checking, repairing etc PDF documents and PDF Forms to address and conform to the the issues of Accessibility.

Additionally their are individual Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) that Adobe has prepared specifying the details of the US Law relating to Accessibility (called Section 508) and outlining the accessibility-related features of various Adobe Products. A VPAT is a standardized form that lists all of the regulations of Section 508 and explains how a given product helps people comply with each regulation. The VPAT was developed by the US Information Technology Industry Council to be used across the software industry.
