We are very fortunate to have a 2009 MAX finalist to present at our November meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, November 24th from 6-8:30pm at the Ohio State University's Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD).
Maria Palazzi, Director of the ACCAD and Associate Professor of Design at The Ohio State University will be presenting the creative possibilities that exist when the worlds of choreography, interactive, animation and design intersect.
Synchronous objects is an interactive exploration of choreographer William Forsythe's One Flat Thing, reproduced. It has received international recognition and was recently selected as a finalist for the Adobe MAX Awards.
The team describes the research as a process in which choreographic ideas are the source of information for the composition of unique visual objects. These objects enable the ideas in the choreography to be quickly grasped in their entirety and suggest new interpretations.
Says Palazzi,"Animation is the core expressive technique that articulates Forsythe’s choreographic intention to the viewer. Artists and scientists working collaboratively on this project used animation techniques such as traditional keyframing, algorithmic and generative approaches to create animation and interactive experiences that reveal Forsythe’s strategies and re-imagine what this dance can look like. These animated manifestations (traces, scores, maps) visualize information in new ways, as an evolving viable research space and as a departure point for conversation and further discussion."
You can view, engage with and learn about the piece at: http://www.synchronousobjects.osu.edu.

About the project:
Synchronous Objects is the result of a collaboration between The Forsythe Company, based in Germany, and researchers at The Ohio State University from design, dance, computer science, geography, statistics and architecture who work together at OSU’s Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). Maria Palazzi (ACCAD/Department of Design), Norah Zuniga Shaw (ACCAD/Department of Dance) and William Forsythe (The Forsythe Company) served as creative directors for the project.
About ACCAD/OSU:
The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at Ohio State is a leading academic center for interdisciplinary teaching and research in computer graphics and visualization. The Department of Dance is recognized nationally and internationally for its leadership in choreography, performance, dance documentation, and dance and technology.

Our December meeting is always a fun event. We will have a pot luck meal (so bring a dish to share with others... salads, entrés or desserts), our end of the bi-annum drawing for the software! What? You don't know what software? Where have you been? One of our members will win any software Adobe makes up to the value of $1299! So far all of our members have chosen the CS3 and now CS4 Design Suite, but you may chose an individual program, if that's all you want. It is your choice. The odds of winning are best you'll find in such a high value prize. So participate and earn extra tickets...share what you've been doing for a ticket; present on a topic for a ticket; bring a friend for a ticket; there are so many ways to acquire tickets. Attend optional photo shoots or field trips. All will garner you another ticket and increase your chances of winning. We will probably be favored with a tune or two from our resident musician, Roy Douglas.
Those in attendance will judge the holiday card making contest. Winner will get a cool prize and need not be present to win.
