  • I'm afraid I missed the Dec. 31, 1969 meeting. :)

My know-how in the MNAEUG is kind of opposite what it is in the Maya Users Group.  I've used After Effects but only for its more basic compositing functions.  I've never created motion graphics with it.  I've heard of Trapcode but don't know what it does.  I've never used 3D layers or written expressions in it.  So I have a feeling I may not be the best one for suggesting topics, given my relative ignorance on the subject.  But I am looking forward to the 3D camera import presentation next meeting.

I'm definitely interested in presentations that focus on taking 3D elements/layers and combining, manipulating, and sweetening them to go beyond what is possible/efficient straight out of the 3D camera.  Depth of field that actually looks good, atmosphere based on depth, diffuse/reflection/shadow/occlusion tweaks, effects layers such as particle renders used as source images for heat distortion, rendering in HDR and adjusting "exposure" in post, using RGB channels of special-purpose renders to manipulate specific aspects of rendered images, stuff like that.

Does anyone have any book or DVD suggestions that cover topics like these?

I booked the room from 4-7, just to be safe.  We'll start at 4:30.  And as Izzy said, we'll probably be done by 6:30.  School can only be in session so long, especially on a Saturday!

Hey dudes and dudettes, looking forward to the meeting (and the fun thereafter).  Organizers, great job rounding up presenters and prizes!

As an FYI, once you arrive at the school, we will have signs directing you to the meeting.  It will take place in Room 343 of Ai's LaSalle building (the "old" building).  I was told that, for now, our new building isn't open on weekends. :(  Maybe next time ...

  • I'd be happy to arrange a meeting at Ai ... the challenge is finding an open room (i.e. no class scheduled in an appropriate room when we want to meet).  We have lecture/presentation rooms as well as hands-on labs (though the labs are limited to roughly 30 people).  Let me know.

Thanks much to Tom, Scott, and Izzy for putting the first meeting together!

    1. Skill level: Intermediate
    2. Use After Effects for: Compositing primarily, and a little quick editing (I know, boo hiss, shut it)
    3. Use AE in conjunction with: Maya
    4. Wish After Effects could: Work with Maya image channels better (e.g. z-depth)
    5. Most interesting: Ability to sweeten images out of Maya (post-processing)
    6. Keep me coming back: Knowledge
    7. Opposed to a fee?  Adobe has deep pockets and should buy us food and beer!  But no, a nominal fee would be okay.
