Good stuff. I particularly relate to the question of whether a design that is not the strongest (in the eyes of the designer) is chosen as the final. The client wants what the client wants.

An excellent resource to see who's up and coming. Useful articles too!

I you could only do one I would go for Lynda. The range of subjects is much higher, the depth within the subjects is greater.
Photoshop User is a great publication and Kelby Media is a very successful organization. At this point I feel the online training (Kelby Training) is a paid supplement to the NAPP member benefits (which are basically awesome and terrific value for money)
The other big player in the game I would consider is Total Training. I like their interface better than Lynda's as you can just sit back and watch without having to start each movie. They have a gust pass that allows viewing of the first 20 mins of every tutorial.
These programs are not getting cheaper (Kelbys just went up) so definitely lock in at least a years worth and budget for the following year a 30% increase.

The obvious solution would be to simply add the extension.
I will assume that there are a large number of files involved, hence your question. In this case I would use an applescript to add the extension.
Unless one is working in a closed loop environment I can see no good reason for not using an extension. The script on a mac is "add to fie names".
Target the folder of images and run the script.
Library/Scripts/Finder Scripts

Yes. From within Lightroom you should notice the folder or folders have a question mark attached to them. Right click on the folder (control click on a Mac) and select "update folder location". Once the folder has been located then all the images inside are found again.
If you do not select the top level folder (lets say by accident) then that folder will remain missing and cannot itself be found but selecting the first child folder and right clicking will give you the option to "add parent folder".
Now, if the top level folder is not missing but all the others inside are you may want to select the top level and right click to select "synchronize folder". This will take a while with this amount of images as it basically runs a modified import. But at least all will be well.
And finally, the moral of the story is: Dont do things behind Lightrooms back. The folder panel is the same as the finder in terms of location and structure. You can move folders into others, create parent folders and child folders. All the while Lightroom is aware of what you are doing.
Hope this helps.
