      Title:
      AuthorWare and mpeg files
      Content:

I am working on a project that requires importing 11 videos. When I try to import the mpg files, AuthorWare stops responding. If I change the video files to a wmv extension, the files import without a problem. I am using version 7.02.

I need to keep the videos in the mpg format because of client requirements.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

      Sincerely,

      Katie

    • Just to be clear - when you change the files, are you literally only changing the file extension, or are you re-encoding them as WMV?

Similarly - files with .mpg extension can actually be any of a number of formats. Are you certain, 100%, that these files are MPG1 files? Or are they, perhaps MPG2, some sort of MPG4, or something else?

Authorware *should* happily support any MPG1 file with no issue. MPG2 requites that you install an appropriate (DVD) CODEC. MPG4 also needs the right CODEC. There are *many* CODECS that could be used for these formats, since MPG is just the container, and the CODEC is the type of compression used. [sorry if this is sounding like a whistle-stop lesson - I don't know what you already know].

Lastly -  what operating system are you running? Authorware 7 does not play well with video on Vista or Windows 7 (Microsoft changed some stuff and Authorware 7 is 6 years old, much older than Vista). Many newer CODECs flat will not work in Authorware on Vista.

      • Steve,

Thanks for the quick response. I'm pretty sure that it is a CODEC problem. AuthorWare on other machines has no problem inserting the same files. I have a new DELL T3500 with a Windows XP operating system. I believe that it does not have the correct CODEC loaded. I downloaded the GOM encoder and it says that it is a mpeg-1 video.

    • Sheesh - just typed a big response and it disappeared.

      Short version

      Try installing this codec pack:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=73c47878-20d0-4c1a-96f4-177d7e0074b7

You may need it, because Microsoft changed the default CODECs installed from Windows Media Player 8 onwards. Certain Dell machines seem to have problems with this.

If that doesn't work, you may find alternatives to try here:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=codec&DisplayLang=en

If that still doesn't work, let me know and I'll see if I remember something else you should try.

      Steve
