        John,

Unfortunately, I have a conflict at the same time and can't attend this event!  Maybe next time?

Cool Flash meetup last night. I have a few questions about the IDE he used during the presentation.

From what I saw last night, Adobe Flex Builder 3 ($249) looks like a rock solid, fully-integrated IDE to code AS3 and Flex. I'm looking to upgrade from the Flash IDE. The Flash IDE is seriously impeding my AS3 development. I want to be able to see a list of my classes, have my IDE support intelligible code folding and robust search, and I want to have quick access to a file browser.

I've also heard great things about Flash Develop (free) but I get the impression that it's nowhere near as sophisticated and powerful as Adobe Flex Builder. Do you have any experience using Flash Develop? I'd like choose on a top notch IDE before I start my next project.

John, you mentioned FTT a couple of times. What is FTT?

          Hi David,

Thanks, and I am happy that you enjoyed the meeting last night`-`

Yes, Flex Builder/Flash Builder is a solid IDE built on top of Eclipse. There is a little learning curve to Eclipse, but you should be comfortable in the IDE in no time at all! I would say that it is well worth the investment! It will save you time, and it is a much better coding environment as well! I used to use the Flash IDE for everything until about a year ago, so I really feel your pain! If you have any questions about set, workflow, etc. Feel free to ask, as I most likely have spend countless hours figure that issue out`-`

As far as Flash Develop it is windows only, but I hear wonderful things about the IDE, but since I hate windows, I have never tried it. You could run parrells on the Mac and use it that way, which I know some people who do. Flash Develop is Actionscript only (I think), so you will not be able to code mxml.

Lastly there is FDT this is what I mainly use, I really love it`-` I really like the live code errors(compiles as you code!),and the rename and move refactoring is great.  It also does Flex, but only in code mode, and does have the components that you can drag onto the stage like flex builder, you need to hand code everything.

In both case there are lots of things that you will need to do with ANT.

I would recomended doing the 30 day trials for Flex Builder & FDT (If you are on a Mac) and test each one side by side. People usually like one or the other, there are lots of simular features to both. The main question I always ask is:

Do you do Actionscript & want to use the Flash IDE  - FDT is my choice

If you do Both Actionscript with the Flash IDE & Flex  -Flex Builder is a better choice.

By the way for the next meeting, I will be going over FDT so it might be a good intro to that editor if you are interested.

Thanks for explaining FDT. I like knowing all of my options before making my decision. I'm going to start out with the Flex Builder demo first. I feel comfortable in the Flash IDE for movieclip creation and animation but not for AS3 coding. Unfortunately I already have plans for Jan 19th so I won't be able to make it to the hfug meeting on FDT.

Will you be recording the presentation so I can watch it later?

              Hi David,

You are very welcome, glad to help`-`

Yes I can really relate, the Flash IDE is not for coding AS 3!

Writing code in the actions panel is like painting with a plastic bag over your brush!

I like working in the flash IDE for creating the assets(movieclips, etc.) then I export the swc file and bring it into FDT(same thing in Flex Builder). If you want to see how to do this, I can show you. If you don't do this you will not get custom coding hinting.

there is a good chance the meetig will be recorded, but I am not 100% sure, still learning how to use the software. My plans for next year to have all the meetings recorded.
