Deconstructing Flex: How to build a rich, modular, scalable Flex RIA (without going insane)"

Abstract:

Flex gives you more than enough rope to hang yourself, and provides little intrinsic guidance about how to use it properly. This presentation will provide a way to holistically think about Flex application development, from creating and applying a design to the UI, to interacting with the server, to properly structuring your application in a modular way so that building it isn't a chore and supporting it isn't torture. Additionally, we will be introducing the HydraMVC framework, which provides an extensible metaphor for logically structuring your application.

Audiences:

Hopefully anyone involved with Flex development, from designer to developer to manager should be able to take something away from this presentation. Designers should take away some guidance on how to deconstruct and build interfaces that make sense for Flex implementation. Managers will be able to understand the various moving parts of a Flex application externally and internally and where different skill sets are needed on a Flex project. However, this presentation is geared primarily toward the Developer or Developer / Designer who has at least an intermediate understanding of Flash / Flex development. That being said, since the group is relatively small, the presentation can provide more of a table-of-contents, and if need be, we can tailor the presentation to provide the most value for the audience. A Q&A and discussion time will be facilitated.

Meeting Minutes:

Thanks a lot to everyone one came out. We had a really great meeting tonight. Popcorn, gold fish, and beer was provided. Sorry about the lame beer, next month I promise a case of Yuengling. We also gave away some cool givaways, saw some new faces, and Fran gave a great presentation on "Deconstructing Flex" and introducted us to HydraMVC. We discussed ideas for starting a Flex/RIA/Design Patterns curriculum of some sort. This would be a planned progressional series in effort to grow the Flex community in Central PA. People seemed to be interested in having this series as an online meeting over Adobe Connect where we can record and archive them. Stay tuned for a survey coming out so we can see where everyone's intereste are.
