      Title:
Creating Outlines of type in InDesign
      Content:

Here is a question we had from one of our user group members. When selecting a type frame and then going to TYPE - CREATE OUTLINES, some formatting is lost. For example, paragraph rules disappear. Is there any way to prevent the rules from disappearing?

Marvin was able to offer a helpful tip to the user group at our meeting last night. If you select the type with the type tool first (rather than selecting the frame), the paragraph rules are retained. Thanks for the tip, Marvin!

    • Some formatting is still lost.  One that I know for certain - text that is underlined.

There are many reasons to outline fonts, but there are two primary reasons that I do so:

      1.  To make the document a little more printer friendly, especially when going to an old RIP.

      2.  To secure the document a little bit to keep clients from editing items that they shouldn't.

With these examples, I find it better to make a pdf (version 4) with a transparent item on the page.  This will cause all of the text to get outlined for the pdf while retaining editable text in the InDesign document.
