Though color photography was in its infancy, Russian photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii traveled around Russia, taking spectacular color photos using his own methods. He'd take 3 consecutive shots of each subject, using red, green, and blue filters, then combine them to produce beautiful color photos. This was pre-Photoshop, yet these photos are perfect as is. http://www.newsweek.com/id/214585

I was struck by the deepness of the color. When you described it, I thought the color might be like so many old photos...weak. But no, the color is strong and vibrant. It really makes Russia look more appealing. I must admit I think most of the photos I've seen of Russia, at least modern USSR, have been rather gray and not very colorful. I love his subject matter and was surprised by the fact that he could take photos of people, since he had to take it three times! Good job keeping everyone still for each shot.
Thanks for another interesting diversion and another hour shot looking at something you've recommended. I swear you could keep me busy all day or night following your recommendations. I also really liked the Obama swearing in photo...that took me hours.
I look forward to your next suggestion.
