      Title:
      IE 8 and CSS 2.1
      Content:

All through the beta, we developers have heard how IE8 would be standards compliant (at last). Now that it has been officially released, what is the consenus among developer? Did MS finally come around or have they missed the mark yet again?

    • Danny,

I had to un-install IE8 and de-evolve back to IE7. For some reason yet to be determined, I had to use compatibility view to test my pages.  This was confusing and annoying because I have yet to learn enough about what techniques to use for consistent IE rendering and could not troubleshoot what I was doing wrong.  Once I was back to IE7, things returned to normalcy.  It's just my humble opinion, but I think the Lords of Redmond have missed the marked yet again.  Shouldn't the point of releasing a new browser be to make developing and viewing a site more-or-less consistent across ALL browsers?

    • I haven't tested IE8 for compliance as of yet, and am in no hurry to for two reasons:

      1. It's still beta. I'll wait until the final release to test, otherwise I'll just have to test again.

      2. Until most people no longer use IE7 and IE6, I'll still have to make my pages work in those browsers. So, even if IE8 is 100% standards compliant, it'll be a long time until I won't have to apply "fixes" to my pages. Right now, I'd just be happy to not have to support IE6. I still have 16% of visitor's to my company's site still using IE6. Maybe another six months and that percentage will be low enough that I won't worry about IE6.

By the way, vistors to my site are as follows:

      IE8 - 8%
      IE7 - 54%
      IE6 - 16%
      Firefox - 15%
      Safari - 5%
