What do you use Fireworks for?
      Content:

      Visual Design? Wireframe? Both?

I've been a fan of Fireworks for years now. I started to use it when working as a Macromedia/Adobe Consultant and never looked back. I've been using it for ALL visual design for web sites to application design. The only time I step away from FWs is for branding work. It's the best. :)

What do you use it for?

I use it for image manipulation, since my computer at work doesn't have Photoshop.  ;)

At home I don't know it well enough to choose it over Photoshop and Dreamweaver.  I'd love to learn.

      • Nice AETO - Image editing in Fireworks is so under-rated. :P What do you like about editing images in Fireworks? I love the bitmap tools, very easy to use.

I have a workflow that I use all the time. I work with lots of vectors to get my design right, then add filters/effects and once I get the design/art the way I like it, I'll select all and right-click and choose Flatten selection where I can then add more effects and push pixels around instead of the art being comprised of vectors. I do this a lot when I can't achieve a certain look or feel with vectors alone. Phew, hope that makes sense, hehe.

    • Nice topic, Tom! :-)

I use Fireworks for every type of computer graphic work that comes across, whether it's for screen or for print, bitmap or vector; logos, sites, animation, photomanip, UI mockup or just fun art - they all go through Fireworks at some point and usually stay there too.

When you wrote "branding work", did you mean logos, or printing stuff? I understand that FW may not be the best app when it comes to certain types of printing tasks, but it suits my purposes well. ;)

      • Ya know I was surprised when all I needed to do with zazzle.com was upload a 32bit PNG with transparency to then be printed on all the merchandise they offer. Thats amazing and didnt require CMYK nor separation, something I havent had to do for 10 years since Ive been in the web industry!!!

        • Yeah, I've noticed this trend too. A designer who works with the print industry regularly gave the reason that the printers themselves have much better conversion methods than we do, so nowadays they actually prefer unchanged RGB images. Good for everyone! ;-)

    • I use it for everything : RIA, webdesign, Print (finish in AI), Motion (export PSD)
I'm so quick with it ...
I hope one day i could use it directly with AE (if only this one could import .png full feature)

      • I think you can copy/paste vectors into AE. Give it a try and let us know if it works. ;-)

        • I try it with no success :

On a solid > on mask ... nothing > on position ... nothing

          [copy as vector - CS3]

    • Alan-- Why is it that with my CS4 FWs for some reason copy/paste doesnt seem to work but works fine in all other versions of FWs. Is it a setting?

SaimJai-- Yes Branding is for logo work along with all the other cool stuff that goes along with it. That's cool you use FWs for Logos. As much as I LOVE FWs I love the control for my type illustrations to be done in AI. In fact the the two main applications I have open constant are FWs & AI.

Nemrod-- What do you mean "Finish in AI" for print work.

Also I do use FWs for all my UI/UX work.

      • Hey Tom -

No setting, could be that when you clicked on something in a Flash panel like the Align panel that the focus is still in the Flash panel. Try clicking on the canvas or PI first before pasting. If you get steps to reproduce I treat that as gold. :)

        • ex. I'm copying a vector image. (logo) from AI over to FWs it wont paste. It could be my version 10.0.0.495 It works fine in ALL other FWs versions i'm running.

      • Finnish in Adobe Illustrator

I export .ai from FW and then check the colors, the document setting and so on :)

    • I use Fireworks for mockups, wireframes, interactive prototypes and general web graphic editing.  I LOVE the Pages feature as it allows me to develop a series of images from one png file, this is especially useful when creating comps for banner ads.

    • I use fireworks for print design ( only logos and business cards ) , web interfaces , icons and web graphics stuff , and lastly digital / vector artworks too.

    • Web Design, image composites/collages, prototyping, messing around. I just love the FW. :-)
