Learn how Maya2009 and Mudbox2009 are used together to create extremely detailed characters while maintaining optimum performance. Marcel will start by preparing a simple character in Maya so we can sculpt and finish a highly detailed version in Mudbox. Once the sculpting has been completed in Mudbox all the modeled information will be extracted in the form of image maps to be used in Maya where you would typically animate your character.

Marcel de Jong is a Senior Solution Engineer at Autodesk and a Digital FX Consultant. Marcel is the co-founder of Gnomon School of Visual Effects a which specializes in training for careers in high-end computer graphics for the entertainment industry.
Marcel has worked with a wide range of clients including DreamQuest Images, DreamWorks, Digital Domain, Warner Digital, Walt Disney Feature Animation, Pixar, and Sony Imageworks. His credits include numerous feature films including Inspector Gadget, Sphere, Armageddon, Batman Returns.
Marcel has been published in Popular Mechanics, ID magazine, MayaSavvy 4.5, CGW magazine, and Innovation. He was the 1999 winner of the IDSA Design Excellence Award. Marcel has a BS from the University of Texas and Art Center College of Design.

For any of you still in the total CG dark....Turn the freaking lights on! This is the future of ART as we know it. Marcel is a gold mine of 3D knowledge.
With Rapid-prototyping (3d printers) we can print out anything we make in Mudbox. More details than any traditional sculptor could ever achieve (resolution is only increasing). If you want it to be colored and textured...well thats happening as well.
Want it to look like Bronze...No problem...
Not only can they be used for art (rapid prototyping) but they are also used to send prototypes to clients across the globe...Mechanical parts can be "faxed" to another location for review, testing, etc...
Back to Mudbox and what it can do...
It can allow younger people who have no real 3d experience to begin making models like artists.
It can also suit a very critical workflow for professionals who have been needing it.
It can subdivide meshes up to 100 million polygons and paint textures over them with an ease unseen in any 3d application yet. You can add multiple viewport filters to better showcase the work in Mudbox so as to give a director an immediate idea of where the artist is headed and then can allow changes to be made before the character is put into the pipeline where aesthetic changes would be harder if not impossible to make.
