Hi All:

Thanks to the generosity of our very own Judith Barnett, we have a place to hold our end-of-year meeting (which gives me until early 2010 to sort out our ongoing meetings).

Why thanks to Judith? Because she's graciously offered to open her home (in Alameda) to us and let us hold our meeting there.

It'll be an informal end-of-year wrap-up, with a focus on "Developer New Year's Resolutions". What changes are you planning on making in the coming year, and why? Bear in mind we're talking changes that are related to being a developer. Nobody really cares that I need to lose 10 more pounds before I can put on a speedo. Or maybe you do, in which case... seek help.

We will still be holding a raffle for Adobe software (up to a $2100 value!), so somebody's holiday season will be getting off to a jolly start :)

If you plan on attending, PLEASE RSVP, as that will help Judith know how many people to cook dinner for. *

PS - Quick update on the raffle. Since I assume the question will be asked... the lucky winner will download the product of their choice, and a key will be emailed to them. As per the official source:

UPDATE:

Our November meeting (previously scheduled for November 3rd) is postponed.

We are looking into a new location (Robert Half in Oakland), as well as discussing continuing to hold our meetings at our existing location (New Horizons in Pleasanton).

Unfortunately, we won't be able to finalize details with either location by this Tuesday.

I hope to know something this week, and to have the November meeting scheduled for some time next week (the week of November 9th).

Our End of Year Extravaganza!

Topic to be determined (suggestions always welcome).

In addition, we'll be holding our first ever Adobe software raffle for any Adobe software valued up to $2100! Must be present to win.

We'll have a few other items to raffle off as a warm-up. Thanks to O'Reilly (now an official East Bay CFUG sponsor) for providing a copy of "Flex 3 Cookbook" and "Head First Java (2nd Edition)".

At their core, design patterns are just useful solutions for common problems that regularly arise in the development process. It's pretty neat to be able to access a set of ideas and solutions for many common problems, contributed from the open development community.

We're going to take a look at design patterns from a new perspective - without any code at all. No long succession of powerpoint slides with code samples and bullet points, just an examination of some of the fundamental ideas and concepts behind some common and highly useful design patterns - with some hands-on interaction!

After that, we'll go into a little more depth on the best practices for finding and implementing the right design pattern for your problem, and some pitfalls we've seen along the way.

Preliminary interest in "Why use a Framework?" as an open discussion.

Well, Sid posted it to the BACFUG mailing list, and Sean tweeted it, so I guess it's official :)

Join us Tues, August 4th at New Horizons Computer Learning Center in Pleasanton, CA for a round-table discussion of "Why Use a Framework?".

Have you encountered co-workers who are "anti-framework"? Are you against the concept of frameworks (it's OK... really!)? What are some of the arguments for using a framework, and what are some of the arguments against?

This will be less of a presentation-style meeting and more of an interactive discussion. Be prepared to state your position ("ambivalent" will be accepted, but grudgingly so) and offer up reasons to support your stance.

We're baaaaa..ack.

After a brief hiatus, we're back with a brand new venue. Thanks to New Horizons Computer Learning Centers in Pleasanton, CA (right by Stoneridge Mall) for graciously offering to sponsor our group and provide us an ongoing home.

Picking up with our "1st Tuesday of the month" schedule, we'll get reacquainted a bit, talk about moving the group forward, and Charlie Griefer (that'd be me) will give a presentation on Balsamiq Mockups. A full license for Mockups ($79 value) will be raffled off. Must be present to win.

The New Horizons location should comfortably hold 20-25. Please RSVP so that we'll know whether or not we're approaching capacity :)
