reference books

I'm on the hunt for reference books. Specifically for Dreamweaver CS4, Flash CS4, ActionScript, PHP, any html or css books. If you feel that you have some laying around that you've "outgrown" let me know. I don't care if they have chicken scratch all though them or not.

Adobe and Mac and Hard Drives

I am new to the Adobe world and new to the Adobe group. I have a few questions as I try to get started.

I am looking into buying a Mac Book Pro (4GB) and purchasing Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express. I am also planning to take courses to learn more about web design and will need to download/buy the appropriate graphics programs.

Questions:

1) I’m not sure what type of Hard Drive to buy to support these applications:

What is the difference between:

500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm vs. 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm

2) Affordability is the key between purchasing Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express. Does anyone have an opinion on either. I work in television and want to work with Final Cut Pro but am wondering if I learn Final Cut Express, do they cross over and would I be able to work with Final Cut Pro?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Problem with "for" loop

I am new to this, so please excuse my ignorance.

I have movie clips on the stage that are named (instance names) in sequence:

gift_mc_1, gift_mc_2, gift_mc_3, etc

I need to add event listners for mouse events like so:

gift_mc_1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, pickUp);
gift_mc_1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, dropIt);

I thought I could do this within a "for" loop like this:

for(var i:int = 1; i < 10; i++) {
   var myGift:String = "gift_mc_" + i;
   myGift.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, pickUp);
   myGift.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, dropIt);
   trace(myGift);
}

This does not work and I would appreciate any advice as to what is wrong with my approach.

After Effects Question

For some reason, whenever I start to type text into ae, it will randomly deselect the text box. This is very frustrating, because I will continue to type, unaware of said deselection and cause all sorts of mayhem. Does anyone know why this happens? Am I simply typing too fast or is there some sort of auto save setting that causes it to save in the middle of text type-age?

Any guesses?

I downloaded the trial version of Dreamweaver CS4 and have been playing around with it a bit. I created a site and made the index page from the "2 column fixed, left sidebar, header and footer". I also added a spry horizontal navigation bar (which turned out to be the most difficult thing to position). The .css file is being linked as an external style sheet.

I wanted to add a "news" page to the site, so I "saved-as" the index page as "news.htm" but it doesn't need to be a two column layout like the index page. So I deleted the sidebar and changed the margin of the content area to extend wider, etc. I immediately saw a problem. My index page had changed when I edited the .css file.

So here's my question. How do you go about pages without making seperate .css files for each page? Or is that what I have to do? I'd hate to have to "re-create" the header, navigation and footer each time I make a new page. The answer may lie in the "template" function but I haven't figure it out yet. Any suggestions or tips on how you work through creating a site would be much appreciated!

Is there an easy way to change the background color when working with a graphic in Photoshop? What I'm trying to erase is the same color as my background, making it difficult to tell if I got it all. I added a layer with color to my project and that helped, but I'm wondering if there's an easier way. In Chyron I can switch between black and grey backgrounds with one button. Anything likethat in Photoshop?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone out there could possibly help me out with this issue I'm having. I'm in the middle of re-designing my website and for some odd reason, I'm getting an inexplicable seperation between divs displaying in Firefox and Safari (but not IE6 or IE7). If anyone has any idea what on earth could be causing this seperation to appear, I'd greatly appreciate some advice on getting rid of the black lines that are showing up between divs.

What new feature in Adobe CS4 gets you excited about creating something new?

For me, it's easily the new motion tween model in Flash CS4. Automatic keyframing, instantly editable motion paths, and the power of the motion editor allow me to create complex timeline animations in a fraction of the time. It's similar to the timeline in After Effects, which I always thought had a great animation system.
