Ben is an Adobe Certified Expert in Premiere and has been using the software for over 5 years. For our meeting, Ben will go over project settings, importing footage, using a time line, and the media encoder. He plans to take a simple project from raw footage to completion. Lauren Bittner - Techead Recruiter, she is speaking on what content makes a good resume.

Sean Cooke - RAUG manager, he will be showing how to make the resume in InDesign CS4 and some Web Portfolio Solutions.

Come out and hear and see what makes a great Resume/Portfolio package from some of the leaders in the creative staffing field. Then watch and learn as we show you some real neat tricks to putting out a clean (and easily updatable) resume and also a web/PDF portfolio.

Meeting Minutes

We had a great night, I think everyone walked away with some new insight into Portfolios and Resumes, and that I would not have had a job if Phil Conein had seen my portfolio from years ago.

Some points I want to leave out there for those that did not come:

Create at least two resumes, one with everything you had ever done in your professional life, and another (or more) specific to the job/employer you are applying to.
SPELLCHECK!
Your email that your resume is attached to IS the cover letter.
SPELLCHECK APPLICATIONS (i.e. QuarkXpress)!
List the last version you used in the application, Adobe Photoshop CS4, not just Photoshop.
Use the application names in your job descriptions, not just "I worked as a designer".
Be descriptive.
Put Month and Year on job history, not just Year.
If you Freelance, LIST IT. If you freelanced for 3 years while working a random job, list freelance.
I learned, I had too many jobs overlapping. So EDIT your moonlighting.
E-portfolios and Web Portfolios get you in the door, hard copied portfolios get the job.
Presentation on the web portfolio like easy navigation are a must.
If you use a template, make sure it does not look like a template.
Printed portfolios MUST be mounted properly, your Art teacher in high school did know something. Crooked portfolios are a distraction and a job loser.
NO THEME RESUMES
Edit your portfolio to about 10 GREAT pieces, not 20 OK pieces.

I am sure there are more points, if anybody remembers any please post.

We will be having our first RAUG meeting of the fall next Wednesday, September 9th from 6-8pm at Artworks.

We are very excited to start up again and see all the familiar ( & new) faces!

Our main speaker this meeting will be Janet Frick. Janet Frick is a Certified Technical Trainer and Adobe Certified Expert in Acrobat, Photoshop and InDesign, a Certified Print Professional, as well as an Adobe Certified Instructor. Janet is one of a special team of 38 consultants who work for Adobe on a part-time basis. Her work can be seen on Adobe’s website for the design center video-workshop highlighting features of Acrobat 9.

At this meeting Janet will be covering Adobe Kuler, Connect Now and InDesign templates.

Sean Cooke will also be speaking and showing off his new book, Mr. Cooke's Little Brown Book. One or two lucky members may have a chance to win a copy!

RAUG is back and better than before, dedicated even more to bringing you only the best in the design and print industry. We want to know what you‘re working on. No more lectures, this time around we want to listen to you. From now on we will focus on panel discussions, with guest experts from the design and print industry sitting on the panel to share their experience and answer panel and audience questions. Be sure to be ready to participate at 6pm Monday night.

This month‘s Panel Discussion Format (PDF) will focus on Overall Design. We want to focus on common problems you are facing like maybe making a design cross-media to even dealing with the client even when they are wrong. Our panel this month will feature Noah Scalin.

Noah is a lifelong activist and founder of the award winning, socially conscious design & consulting firm Another Limited Rebellion (www.alrdesign.com). Noah‘s work at ALR has gained international exposure in over two-dozen books and is frequently featured in design publications. Noah is also an adjunct faculty member in the graphic design department at Virginia Commonwealth University where he teaches Design Rebels (www.designrebels.org), a course on socially conscious graphic design. Noah‘s first book, SKULLS, was recently published by Lark Books and is based on his award winning online art project Skull-A-Day (www.skulladay.com).

We promise this year to have no one right answer but a great opportunity to discover better solutions.
