Twice a year, Adobe bestows some great schwag upon us. It's your choice of ANY Adobe product with a retail value of up to $2,100 -- not including Master Collection. Most people choose a suite such as CS4 Design Premium, Web Premium or Production Premium -- but you might choose just one single "point product" instead if you're the winner.

You've been earning chances for this giveaway as you've attended previous meetings. We've been dutifully collecting your tickets each month and keeping them for this giveaway.

You can earn "extra chances" by doing the following:

Giving a product demonstration at this December meeting: just a few minutes of demo

Our October meeting has changed topics and presenters; our scheduled speaker, Karen Schory, had to cancel on us because of schedule difficulties.

SO....the October 1 meeting is still on, with a new topic. This is a question near and dear to all Adobe visual design tool users -- "when and why should I use Fireworks when I'm so used to Photoshop?" Or, "would Photoshop be able to do this operation better than Fireworks?"

To help us weed through the differences, we've asked Dee Sadler to supervise the Showdown. Dee has presented this topic to my fellow Adobe User Group Managers and it's one of the top-rated presentations we've gotten to see. Dee is an Adobe certified Instructor and has vast experience with both of these visual products...she knows her stuff!

Each product has its merits -- but at the end of this session, you'll be able to know the differences and apply the right tool to the right situation.

We'll look forward to seeing you for the PS/FW Showdown with Dee. I realize some of you were eagerly anticipating the Typography presentation with Karen and I hope to reschedule it for a future meeting. If you need to change your RSVP based on this topic change, please do so using the Meetup interface so we have an accurate count.

See you next Thursday, October 1! Come at 6:00pm for food, the meeting gets underway around 6:30pm. I'm looking forward to seeing you there. For the KCDesignCore September meeting, we'll be launching the Community Core Project, a collaborative effort between all FOUR of the KC Adobe Communities: KCDesignCore, KCWebCore, KCDevCore, and KCVideoCore. We've chosen De LaSalle Center (http://www.delasallecenter.org) as our project this year -- using our groups' collective skills to give back to our community.

De La Salle Education Center is the region's only private secular alternative school system educating nearly 350 urban youth daily at three schools.

Working with the De LaSalle marketing staff, we'll be creating a new design for their web site and taking it all the way through to completion and hosting. Along the way, we'll get involved in the design, the coding, the back-end development, and creating some great video to be used on the new site.

This meeting is our kickoff for the fall event which will extend over all the Adobe groups over the next few months of fall; come prepared to look at the existing De La Salle site and begin making some wise design decisions as we launch.

This event is not sponsored by the KC Adobe groups, but you may find it interesting if you're considering sharpening your mobile-development skills. The Palm Pre uses nothing but JavaScript, HTML and CSS to work its magic for applications -- this is a chance to learn about the ecosystem of the Palm Pre and develop something cool for this new market.

We’re exactly one week away from PreDevCamp and wanted to give you an idea of what we’ve got planned. The organizers of PDC:KC have been meeting for a few weeks and our vision for the event is similar to a BarCamp/unCon/hackfest/StartupWeekend/etc… We have the facilities in place and enough smart people in attendance that we’ll be able to collaborate and share all kinds of ideas and experiences without the need of a rigid, formal structure.

We’re going to kick off the day starting at 8am with registration and getting things set up. Then, beginning at about 9am we’ll be using the main presentation area for a few sessions to ensure everyone becomes familiar with WebOS and gets the SDK installed. To make this process as smooth as possible, we encourage everyone attending to install the SDK and the Pre emulator beforehand. It’s free, simple, and you can find instructions at http://developer.palm.com/.

Once everyone is up & running, we’ll encourage people to break off into groups, build some apps, and present sessions on specific topics. If you have any app ideas and need additional developers, the main presentation area will be available to pitch your ideas to recruit others. Towards the end of the day, we’ll have some time blocked off for groups and individuals to demo their apps to everyone.

A few other notes:

Lunch will be provided by a sponsor!
If you have any additional routers, hubs, ethernet cables, power strips, etc… we’d really appreciate you bringing them for those freak scenarios that always occur when you get a large number of laptops all in one place.
The event space does have wireless internet, but when a large amount of people all try to download a hefty SDK pack all at the same time, you never know what to expect. As a backup, we’ll have CDs and thumbdrives available with all the tools neccesary to the SDK & emulator installed.

To summarize, here’s the rough agenda for the day:

9am-11am: Give everyone the knowledge and tools they need to begin development.
11am-4pm: Build some kick ass applications
4pm-5pm: Wrap up the day with demonstrations of all the awesome stuff we’ve built

Author, "Real World Compositing with Photoshop CS4". Scott has been an image analyst and advanced amateur photographer for over 6 years. He runs an Adobe user group, focusing on digital media, and have lectured on digital image capture systems. Currently, he is an administrator for a rather large instructional Photoshop forum.

Scott will be taking a few of our images from the photowalk we did at the market, Cosentino's and transforming them in Camera Raw. If you have a camera that can take images in Raw mode and you haven't been utilizing it, this is the meeting for you. I believe there will be an opportunity for you to follow along at some point for some hands-on if you have a machine with CS4 on it.

Since this meeting night (first Thursday of the month) would fall so close to the Independence Day holiday, we're taking the opportunity to "breathe" from a very busy month of June and have canceled the July 2009 meeting.

Bring your digital camera and start shooting! Cosentino's Downtown Market is Kansas City's newest downtown grocery with incredible colors, textures, architecture and people. We've obtained permission from the owners to do this year's KC DesignCore Photo Walk inside their beautiful new store.

Each "regular" KC DesignCore attendee who participates will be entered to win up to $2,100 worth of Adobe software (up to but not including Master Collection CS4). The winner of our photo contest will receive two additional raffle tickets, second place winner will receive one additional raffle ticket.

The rules are very basic: bring your camera, respect the shoppers inside the store, and avoid shooting identifiable faces of customers. Feel free to take photos of store employees, however -- everyone from the sushi chef to the guy making 17 flavors of gelato are fair game.

We've agreed to give Cosentino's the use of any photos we shoot during this event in appreciation for their permission to use their venue. Who knows...your work might end up in a Cosentino's marketing piece or a web site some day! To this end, you'll need to sign an agreement specifying that your photos will become property of Cosentino's following the contest and may not be used for any commercial purposes; this is an educational event designed to improve your skills!

Take advantage of the rich palette of visual imagery inside the new store, pare down your memory card to the best few shots, and submit them for the contest.

See you on Thursday night, June 4. Charge your batteries and clean off your memory card. And if you happen to get hungry during the night...we know where you can find some great food!

Mike Hendricks of the KC Star calls this store "the swankiest supermarket I’ve ever seen. Ceiling murals. Marble countertops..."

It will be a fun evening to feast our eyes on what's happening in the world of food in downtown Kansas City. See you there!

We sometimes see Fireworks as the red-headed stepchild of the Creative Suite. But for an increasing number of projects involving on-screen graphics and even high-resolution print work, Fireworks can do some pretty amazing things.

Some of our group members use Fireworks for EVERYTHING. We'll find out why!
